I was such an overly sensitive child, I could never stand to watch main characters in a show be utterly humiliated. I'd have to fast-forward or mute the TV until it was over. Hell I couldn't even stand Jerry always getting on over Tom (I know Tom wasn't a good guy but he just hardly ever won).

But I think this is in my Top 5 said moments. It was always great to see Dave Chapelle get his just desserts later though.

Oh, God, I know what you mean. Sometimes I take a "bathroom break" when I'm at the movie theater, just because there's this one scene in a film that has me cringing and squirming.

Yeah I remember doing the whole "I have to go outside for a bit." when I went to see Aladdin for the second time (I must have been about 4) because I couldn't stand to watch the scene where, after he says goodnight to Jasmine, he gets arrested and nearly murdered by Jafar and his guards. It was such a mood-swinger! Even now it makes me squirm.

/baby.

i'm still like that, tbh.

SAME. HERE.

Even now if there's a part in a movie or show where I know a character is going to get embarrassed/humiliated I cover my ears and close my eyes until it is over.

Or I just mute the TV and don't watch until I know it's done.

It just...ugh. It makes me feel horrible and embarrassed, even though they're just fictional characters, and I HATE that feeling.

(This is also why I absolutely hate The Office. It's just like a half-an-hour of embarrassment squick torture.)

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Even if the character is an absolute arsehole, like Rimmer from Red Dwarf or Cartman from South Park, but they're so funny that I love them; I still don't want to see them go through anything that might 'break' them like pretty much what happened to Sherman in this scene.

You have to make me really HATE a character for me to enjoy seeing him get humiliated or punished (like I said with Buddy getting back at Dave Chapelle later in the film). I mean really loathe any time they're on screen. Or if they're just a side-character like the two dimensional bullies you'd get in those 90's high school movies.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Argh Rimmer. My feelings for him are why I'm afraid to watch more Red Dwarf because I just can't love to see him broken.

Haven't seen this Eddie Murphy film.

But when I was a kid I couldn't stand to watch Ricky yell at Lucy. It just made me run out of the room. I don't get it, it's a comedy and obviously they were going to make up in the next scene but I couldn't stand it.

/I just have feelings etc.

I am actually terrified for the new series more than I am excited (though I am excited). I really don't want them carry on with the whole "drama plus comedy" angle they started in S7 (not so much in S8. Revived it a bit in BTE). I loved the show as what it was for the first six series. A classic British sitcom that didn't take itself too seriously. The boys would go through shit, especially Rimmer, but it would be so brilliantly laughed off in the next minute that it was never too hard to take (Rimmerworld for example).

Of course I'll be tuning in but any cringe-worthy scenes of OOT angst and I'll be muting the TV. :P

oh god this. and no one i know irl (except my bffs) even understand what an embarrassment squick is so they always laugh at me when I freak out ):

Jerry was a dick. ._.

*Total Tom-girl* :p

[identity profile] stupid-laura.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, me too. I have always had such a thing about humiliation. I cried at the end of Matilda when the Trunchbull got her comeuppance, even though I KNEW she deserved it. (And no one has ever let me live it down :( )

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
See that I enjoyed coz I felt she earned it. Which again just completely goes against my whole "I even hate it when loveable arseholes get humiliated" comment.

I think for me it's just that I have such sympathy for The Woobies. Characters who always get shit on, whether they're good or evil. If they're high up in power and always get what they want while being evil then I like to see them fall. Wheras lowly characters who only now and then get the spot-light only to have it get cruelly taken away by the end of the scene, whether they deserve it or not, is so fricken' heartbreaking!

Speaking of which; the dress-tearing scene in Cinderella? Another one that I have to watch with my hands over my face. 0_0

Gosh, I STILL do this. I'd cover my eyes or my ears and/or mute the movie/show. I just get so excited. My family thinks I'm utterly insane. They always tell me to stop pausing the movie over every little movie and just watch the darn thing, but I can never do that. When it's especially bad I'd have to get up and go somewhere. Like, I'd go to the kitchen to get a glass of water or take a sudden (and usually unnecessary) bathroom break, and then when I'd return I'd watch it through slightly parted fingers or with my hands cupped over my ears and my eyes very narrow (peaking, basically) like it's some kind of horror movie. =/

The same thing happens when I'm reading. =/

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I do the watching-through-fingers thing when I'm embarrassed for a character (and I pretty much never feel it this strongly in real life when real people are involved, so WTF is that about?) but I really want to figure out why the hell it helps! I mean, you're still watching, whatever's going on is still happening, so why does only seeing just the screen through your fingers help? Makes no sense whatsoever and that has bugged me for years.

I saw that movie for the first time in years a few months ago and it's been so surreal seeing Dave in films anymore because he lives the town over from me, and I see him all the time walking down the street whenever I go over there--it's a little hippie town and his kids skateboard down the sidewalks and he comes and gets his nails done in the nail salon across from my university.

Oh God YES. And this has reminded me of the utter trauma of that scene in Mary Poppins where Mr Banks loses his job and they even rip up the flower in his buttonhole *bawls*

You're not alone!

This is one of the reasons I can't watch reality television and hate stuff like the X Factor. I mean, seeing someone come on stage, usually thinking they're great, and then get laughed at and crushed by the audiences and judges. Even when they're not embarrassed, I sure as hell am, I can't even stay in the same room when it's on.
