[The Nutty Professor]

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get you. It's a terrible and raw feeling and I don't think anybody can completely understand unless they've been through it.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Eddie Murphy does have really expressive eyes.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Poor puppy. :

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
What happens in that scene?

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
If I recall, Murphy's character takes his date to this comedy club where this comedian singles him out from the crowd and starts verbally assaulting him over his weight for laughs...

I hate Eddie Murphy. I hate the Nutty Professor, old and new version. And I wish the whole thin-actor-in-a-fatsuit thing will fucking die in a fire.

But I'll be honest, that scene had this fat girl tear up a bit. I will give it that.

Basically, Sherman finally gets up the courage to ask his co-worker on a date. But during the date the comedian on stage starts riffing on Sherman's weight and humiliating him in front of the entire room.

Here's the scene (I cant embed it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ8K0UpHEec

I was such an overly sensitive child, I could never stand to watch main characters in a show be utterly humiliated. I'd have to fast-forward or mute the TV until it was over. Hell I couldn't even stand Jerry always getting on over Tom (I know Tom wasn't a good guy but he just hardly ever won).

But I think this is in my Top 5 said moments. It was always great to see Dave Chapelle get his just desserts later though.

Oh, God, I know what you mean. Sometimes I take a "bathroom break" when I'm at the movie theater, just because there's this one scene in a film that has me cringing and squirming.

i'm still like that, tbh.

SAME. HERE.

Even now if there's a part in a movie or show where I know a character is going to get embarrassed/humiliated I cover my ears and close my eyes until it is over.

Or I just mute the TV and don't watch until I know it's done.

It just...ugh. It makes me feel horrible and embarrassed, even though they're just fictional characters, and I HATE that feeling.

(This is also why I absolutely hate The Office. It's just like a half-an-hour of embarrassment squick torture.)

His face in that scene... DDDDD:

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, just thinking about that scene upsets me. I wasn't a fan of the movie & am not really a fan of Eddie Murphy, but he played that scene perfectly.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not a fan of Eddie Murphy, but damn that scene made me tear up

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
the humiliation, the helplessness, the fact that he was with someone he had feeling for and was hoping to impress, having to take her home afterwards and face the pity looks - the whole combo was incredibly depressing.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
AARGH, I HADN'T WATCHED THAT MOVIE IN YEARS AND HAD COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT SCENE.

UNTIL NOW.

Good god, it is just so depressing. And that movie is so terrible...how DARE they have such a legitimately heart-wrenching scene in it!

Ugh, it's making me sad just thinking about it. :(

[identity profile] zombieroadtrip.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
All the movies/shows that involve a character getting singled out at a comedy club have really made me never want to go near clubs like that... ever. I like comedy but, wow, no thanks.

Jesus god I hate that you made me remember this scene, I haven't seen the movie in yeeeeeears

yeah, that was heartbreaking. I hate feeling embarrassed for someone. Haaaate it - that's why I can't watch The Office; but this brought a truly incredible level of sadness into it too.

I've never understood why that scene was supposed to be sad. I've been mocked like that, too, for my weight, even in front of my slender girlfriend. I was more annoyed by the quality of the fat jokes people were throwing at me, so I started telling better ones. The hecklers eventually gave up when it became apparent that the fat chick was out-funnying them.

Yeah. I hate that movie because it was pretty much the beginning of the end of Eddie Murphy's career as an actor worth any respect ("You mean I can just put on a fatsuit instead of being funny?"), but the movie itself isn't awful and that scene...

That's a rough scene.

I'm not big, never have been, but that scene is played in a way that just strikes a chord for anyone who was used to being singled out and picked on. It's not just that he's getting laughed at; it's that it's the one time he had enough courage to take a chance.

[identity profile] ravenya03.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Arrgh, I hated watching this scene. I think the worst part was when he realized that the comedian was going to single him out and tried to make a run for it. So heartbreaking.

[identity profile] gasai.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
i always thought that was awful

[identity profile] azure15.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
I hate hate that bit. I have to change the channel if I'm watching the film.

I've never had that experience myself, but it's gut wrenching to watch.

[identity profile] ms-manic.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God me too. Just seeing the screen cap made me sad. I've been bullied for my weight, along with being bullied for absolutely everything else whilst at school. That scene really sums up feeling completely and utterly alone, like you don't belong to normal society and you never will. You just feel so disgusted at yourself, like you barely count as a human, because why else would people treat you that way? Honestly, it makes me tear up just thinking about how small it makes you feel. It's sounds silly, because I'm not even a fan of that film or Eddie Murphy, but I think people could learn a lot from that scene. Saying words can't hurt is bollocks.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2011-12-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness, I haven't thought about this film in years and years but yeah that was a hard scene to watch. Like a lot of other commenters I'm not good at watching people being humiliated.
