childhood best friends grow up, and so did the boys. :(

Fuck that shit. Supernatural had THE PERFECT setup/template, and then they went and ruined it ALL by putting in angels/demons, so I agree with this secret 100%.

I wouldn't have minded if Dean's issues had changed when he grew older and Sam's as well, as long as they'd stuck to the "seedy diners" and rock music and "saving people, hunting things" and so on and so on. What Supernatural is now is a nasty mix of not enough Sam and Dean and too much everything else.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, it might have been a decent, bland procedural and fizzled out after a couple of seasons if it had stuck to that formula.

I'm so fucking glad this show puts character development ahead of cut-and-dry TV buddy-show repetition, because the show you want sounds like crap.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Coming here late to say THIS /\. Well said stella. I'm so tired of whiners. If you want a procedural supernatural show go watch Grimm.

OH MY GOD, SOMEONE IS STATING THEIR OPINION ABOUT A TELEVISION SHOW IN FANDOMSECRETS???????????//???/

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
NA

I don't know. I think I might have liked the sort of procedural format that died after four or five years (total, not after the angels and demons bit) better than what we have now because I've never really liked Supernatural's character development.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
what don't you like about the character development?

I've heard people complain that it's too negative, that the show's basically one huge downward spiral, and it's hard to argue with that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
SA

I don't really know, to be honest. When I last watched (which was some time ago, mind), Sam and Dean's personalities had essentially switched except Dean's manpain was upped to eleven. They didn't seem like the same characters I had grown to like in the beginning and I thought the overarching storyline was ridiculously stupid, so I gave up on the show. I mean, it made sense given the context of what had happened to them, but I just didn't like Sam or Dean anymore.

YES! I still love MofW episodes, but i love that the boys are *not* the same as they were in season one. They've *changed*, they grew up, they're *different now* after seven years of insane/violent/traumatic events.

And that's how it *should* be.
*loves Show and everything about it*

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching sometime in season four, but I know what you mean. I found my seasons 1-3 dvds yesterday, and I was hit with a huge wave of nostalgia since I remember how the show used to be and know what it is now through friends and places like F!S. I miss what Supernatural used to be.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm right there with you OP :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. Me, too.

[identity profile] venomlaced.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some things I miss, some things I don't. I didn't start watching live 'til season five, but I personally don't watch for the fandom interaction anyways. I still want to try and see it through to the end.

[identity profile] moonbeamdancer.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here OP, I'll watch to the end and I love some of the new characters we've met, but I do miss how things used to be.

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. Once the show actually ends, I might watch season 5 again and attempt to finish the entire series, since I sort of dropped it. As it stands, he plots/character development I remember from season 5 sort of tainted the rest of the series for me, and I'm still a bit annoyed about that.

[identity profile] ell-de-gothia.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that way too, and I only got into the show a year and a half ago. Meaning, I'm not saying it because I was soooo into fandom before it got all popular and shit, I just prefer monster of the week episodes to story arcs.

Still gonna watch until the end though. I'm not disliking the show as it is, just prefered the earlier seasons.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
maybe it's just me, but when I get nostalgic for The X-Files, I rewatch my favorite mythology episodes, not the monsters of the week.

when I started watching Supernatural, the bigger picture was so much more interesting to me than the one-off monsters. I'd sit through MotW episodes just wanting to find out more about Sam and Dean and their past and the hunting world. idk. I love where the show's taken them (even if it's depressing) and I'm so glad it outgrew its "saving people hunting things" setup and developed into this crazy character-driven hot mess.

I don't think, when a show been on for the better part of a decade, that it's irrational to miss what used to be.

But Dean still has self-worth issues, they've just gotten suicidal. He's still shooting first and asking questions later, let's be real. Sam still wants to be normal (imo) but life, the universe, and everything has told him that that's literally impossible and Sam is nothing if not practical in order to not be suicidal like his brother, Urban legends still happen, they just connect more with the arc. Seedy diners has turned into things more like the running gag of Biggertons, but I'm okay with that.

But honestly, when people say things like this, I wonder how they think that would work. Even in season 1, they whole convention of hunting things/saving people was really Dean wanting an excuse to spend all of his time with Sam, in the only way he knew how. Now they will spend eternity together, so if they went back to that, or even if they had stayed there, I think everyone would feel frustrated that the show wasn't going anywhere. I'm just saying that the MOTW format was still there to mostly serve character growth, and even then there were the psychic kids, so...

I do miss the classic rock though, but that has more to do with the music budget, so DAMN YOU CW!!!!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2011-12-18 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If they'd never allowed Show or the boys to grow, it would have just fizzled out.

*give them a music budget, damnit!!*

[identity profile] chipsforjustice.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Couldn't agree with you more.

I can't help but think that it has something to do with the simplicity of it all, in the beginning? It was all so easy to understand, both for us, the audience, and the characters in the show. By now, it can be hard for me to watch current stuff because they are both so emotionally hurt in so many ways. (For example, it's tough to see Dean be such an alcoholic and depressed for all these different reasons.) Not to mention, I loved their family dynamic back in season 1-3. Once all that stuff with Ruby till now happened, you can tell that they're still brothers, but they're just not in the same place as they used to be. (Which, is somewhat realistic, sure, but considering that they're all they have? It's disheartening.)

/look at me ramble on and on!

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, yeah, IA. And I only got into the show two years ago. I really like all the religious stuff, but some of the changes make me sad. (Although I don't miss Sam's quest to Be Normal, mostly because it drove a rift between the boys a lot and I HATE it when they're fighting for, like, an entire season.)
