Aww, glad you found the reason! But I also feel bad that you had to live so long with the pains, because in Finland(where I live) glutein allergy is diagnosed really quickly! It irks me that it's though of a "rare" decease in USA(where I believe you live :D), when it actually isn't that uncommon.
(And where did I learn this? From "Mystery Diagnosis", a show of people just like you.)

I used to love that show! They changed the channel it's on and I haven't watched it for a while.

OP: Yay, I'm so glad you're doing well.

Maybe it's more common in some parts of the world than others? I only know one person with celiac disease

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wonder about that too. I've only heard about one person who had to go gluten-free, so it may be more common in some countries.

You're in the states, yes? I'm a Coloradan, and I know quite a few people with it. I'm wondering if it's just more concentrated here or more commonly diagnosed or something.

I know a lot of people with gluten allergy. (I'm from Sweden.) I mean, a lot of food chains have an gluten free option to their regular bread or pizza crust or whatnot.

unless you're talking about me, you know at least two!

There are more and more gluten-free products being sold in grocery stores, but I personally don't know anyone who suffers from this. Still doesn't excuse the doctor from missing it as a possibility.

1 in 133 people has it. Most of them don't know it. I didn't know it for years and thought I had a whole bunch of problems instead of one big one.

They used to think that it always appeared in childhood and made you extremely thin. But if you have it less strongly than that, it appears in adulthood after years of slow damage. And in those cases it tends to make you FAT, because you can absorb calories but not nutrients like vitamins and minerals, which makes you constantly hungry.

It also varies from doctor to doctor. I had these on and off stomach pains for a while and after I went to a doctor about it, one of the first things they did was test me for celiac disease (it came back negative, but the point is they looked into it). They also did an ultrasound of my gallbladder, which ended up being the problem.
But I've heard TONS of horror stories from people on the internet who had gallbladder problems that went misdiagnosed/undiagnosed for years as well as OP's problem. Same for hypothyroidism, which they also found I'd had for twenty years without knowing it. I was really lucky I suppose, although hopefully more doctors are competent than not.

I LOVE that show. I watched it obsessively when my husband had a mysterious undiagnosed illness. I was already pretty sure it was lupus, but we couldn't get bloodwork confirmation for over a year, so I was always on tyhe lookout for other options. Turns out, it was lupus all along.
