I hate when doctors will tell a patient that you're either making it up or it's all in their head. I've never had that happen to me but if it does, you bet your ass I would find a new doctor.

(I sometimes say that they should have their license taken away, but that's probably a little extreme.)

My mother used to have an issue with doctors--it wasn't that they'd tell her she was making it up, but they thought her lethargy was due to "being obese". Turns out her thyroid levels were all kinds of screwed up, when they finally did test her.

A lot of women (especially fat women) have this experience. I have an endocrine disorder that went undiagnosed for about ten years because I couldn't get a doctor to believe that I wasn't just "cheating on my diet". (Never mind that it's exceedingly odd to gain 22 kilos in six months in the first place...)

The same doctor who told me my ME was just me tiring myself and I should suck it up and stop skipping school then told my sister (who's been having horrible pains for like two or three years now) straight-out that she was making it up.

Needless to say, neither of us have been to see her since.

How is that extreme? If they can't do their job, then they dont need to be doing it.

I had a family friend that had a brain tumor that was misdiagnosed and undiagnosed, he died during the MRI. Doctor went on his merry way, still treating people today.

IMO doctors should face criminal charges for this kind of bullshit.

The only thing to be careful is that remember that doctors can make mistakes, too. I'm not saying doctors shouldn't take responsibility for not doing their job correctly, but sometimes people are mistaken.
Things like that definitely need to be looked into, to see why the doctor made the mistake he did and learn from it, but not every case of misdiagnosis necessarily needs to lead to criminal charges, I think....

There's a difference between making a mistake and telling a patient that's keeps seeing you for years that their problem is made up.

I agree. I was just objecting to the straight-out misdiagnosis>>criminal charges equation.

It wasn't brain tumor until it was too late.

Seriously. I went to the same doctor for ten years and told her over and over about how messed up my menstrual cycle and about my weird mood swings and all she'd ever say was that I was just overweight and my period would regulate eventually.

Lo and behold I had to change doctors when I moved and my new doctor almost immediately realized I had PCOS as soon as I started telling him about my problems. It's nice to have a doctor who's actually really knowledgeable about how the body works.

When I think about how much better I'm doing now I just want to go back and give that old doctor a good smack on the back of the head for being such a goober.

I saw about four or five gynecologists before I eventually switched to a medical practice where the GP looked at my symptoms, did hormone tests, and said, "Yeah, we are sending you to an endocrinologist" who diagnosed me with PCOS and was baffled because apparently I was such a classic textbook case she asked if her medical student could come in and see me (which I was just fine with, I love helping out med students, and I usually get more information that way).

I have seen several gynecologists since then who have had no idea what PCOS even is and how it should be treated. There is a reason when anyone over on

vaginapagina asks about PCOS, I tell them to see a endo rather than a goddamn gyn.

That's crazy! I ended up going to a local naturopath in the area about six months ago and he guessed I had PCOS after about five minutes, but I think I lucked out. I've never met anyone who knew so much about how the body works and really, honestly wants to help people.

Lol, as I'm sure you can tell I'm still kind of flabbergasted at how awesome he is.
