NO OFFENSE BUT.....

[identity profile] 1918321.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Your doctor is a quack and you need to find someone else NOW.

Who the hell would have let this go undiagnosed for 2 years, and blame you for drug seeking behavior.

WHAT THE FUCKING HELL.

I have to agree.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate when doctors will tell a patient that you're either making it up or it's all in their head. I've never had that happen to me but if it does, you bet your ass I would find a new doctor.

(I sometimes say that they should have their license taken away, but that's probably a little extreme.)

My mother used to have an issue with doctors--it wasn't that they'd tell her she was making it up, but they thought her lethargy was due to "being obese". Turns out her thyroid levels were all kinds of screwed up, when they finally did test her.

A lot of women (especially fat women) have this experience. I have an endocrine disorder that went undiagnosed for about ten years because I couldn't get a doctor to believe that I wasn't just "cheating on my diet". (Never mind that it's exceedingly odd to gain 22 kilos in six months in the first place...)

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] fenrischained.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The same doctor who told me my ME was just me tiring myself and I should suck it up and stop skipping school then told my sister (who's been having horrible pains for like two or three years now) straight-out that she was making it up.

Needless to say, neither of us have been to see her since.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] 1918321.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
How is that extreme? If they can't do their job, then they dont need to be doing it.

I had a family friend that had a brain tumor that was misdiagnosed and undiagnosed, he died during the MRI. Doctor went on his merry way, still treating people today.

IMO doctors should face criminal charges for this kind of bullshit.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing to be careful is that remember that doctors can make mistakes, too. I'm not saying doctors shouldn't take responsibility for not doing their job correctly, but sometimes people are mistaken.
Things like that definitely need to be looked into, to see why the doctor made the mistake he did and learn from it, but not every case of misdiagnosis necessarily needs to lead to criminal charges, I think....

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] 1918321.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between making a mistake and telling a patient that's keeps seeing you for years that their problem is made up.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I was just objecting to the straight-out misdiagnosis>>criminal charges equation.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] 1918321.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In the case of my family friend, he had been having problems for about three years or so, but it was always stress, or migraines or drug seeking behavior.

It wasn't brain tumor until it was too late.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I went to the same doctor for ten years and told her over and over about how messed up my menstrual cycle and about my weird mood swings and all she'd ever say was that I was just overweight and my period would regulate eventually.

Lo and behold I had to change doctors when I moved and my new doctor almost immediately realized I had PCOS as soon as I started telling him about my problems. It's nice to have a doctor who's actually really knowledgeable about how the body works.

When I think about how much better I'm doing now I just want to go back and give that old doctor a good smack on the back of the head for being such a goober.

I saw about four or five gynecologists before I eventually switched to a medical practice where the GP looked at my symptoms, did hormone tests, and said, "Yeah, we are sending you to an endocrinologist" who diagnosed me with PCOS and was baffled because apparently I was such a classic textbook case she asked if her medical student could come in and see me (which I was just fine with, I love helping out med students, and I usually get more information that way).

I have seen several gynecologists since then who have had no idea what PCOS even is and how it should be treated. There is a reason when anyone over on [livejournal.com profile] vaginapagina asks about PCOS, I tell them to see a endo rather than a goddamn gyn.

Re: I have to agree.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's crazy! I ended up going to a local naturopath in the area about six months ago and he guessed I had PCOS after about five minutes, but I think I lucked out. I've never met anyone who knew so much about how the body works and really, honestly wants to help people.

Lol, as I'm sure you can tell I'm still kind of flabbergasted at how awesome he is.

I agree. I recently had to beg my grandmother to change doctors. There are many other reasons, but most recently she tore two ligament in her knee and her doctor kept claiming it was arthritis, sent her to physical therapy, but when it didn't help, she did a MRI and noticed it was ripped to shreds. Why the fuck did she not do a MRI in the first place? Ridiculous.

Agreed, hard.

How the hell did this "doctor" pass medical school if they can't even recognize allergies?

As unfortunate as it seems, it might just be that OP is female and she got saddled with a really sexist doctor. I've had a few doctors tell me that I was just making things up because they couldn't find the problem, then lo and behold, a problem is there. :\ Seems like women get taken much less seriously than men as healthcare patients (based on my experience, my mom's, my sister's, my uncle's, and my brother's, that is.)

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much. I went undiagnosed and in constant pain for four years because every doctor I saw told me I had 'pulled a muscle' or 'strained something', because clearly, hip/back pain from a pulled muscle lasts for four years.

I finally saw a rheumatologist who tested me for fibromyalgia and lo and behold, I wasn't full of shit. :/ It's disheartening when you tell someone you haven't been able to walk for three days and they accuse you of making things up or exaggerating.

I had it for over 30 years before they caught it and was blamed for drug-seeking behaviour and being fat.

The first month off gluten without counting calories I lost 10 pounds.

I agree so much. It really upsets me when doctors don't listen to their patients or claim they're faking it/it's all in their head. I've had it happen to my family and it really sucks.

OP de-anoning because... who cares? lol

I'm inclined to agree. I had only been going to the doctor for about six months, after I decided the pain wasn't just going away. But yes, I'm quite annoyed with it all. It went from changing my BC, to a pap smear and blood tests, to anti-depressants (yes really), straight to a CAT scan. Like... what? We can't fucking afford that, and the doctor says it so nonchalant, like it's not a couple thousand dollars.

I had asked her once, "I've tried Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve, and (safe) combos of them, and nothing helps." She's just like "Well, I don't know what to tell you." Rest assured I won't be going back to that doctor.

I agree. Some doctors just flat out suck.

Hmm, how about the doctor who told me that fibromyalgia didn't exist and I was just looking for drugs, and she wouldn't see me until I got off "all this addictive medication"? (Including my birth control in the mix there.)

Or, or! The doctor who told me chronic pain patients were a blight on society, and that useless treatment of chronic pain was ruining the medical profession. (This same doc being the one that put me on a blood pressure medication that was causing me to nearly stop breathing, and when I called to complain, RAISED THE DOSAGE BY DOUBLE.... yeah....)

I have had some really amazing doctors. But holy fucking shit, there are some quacks out there.

Re: NO OFFENSE BUT.....

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience (many years of pain before a diagnosis) if doctors don't know what the matter is immediatly they imply you are lying or want drugs.
