Unless we're talking soft/hard core porn, in which case primary sexual characteristics come to play, I never get why people care about the sexes of the characters in a pairing.

Because some people are romantically attracted to a certain sex, and prefer to read about what they find attractive? There's nothing wrong with that.

Because people are socialized to see a person differently depending on their gender. Even if we try to be gender-blind, a girl doing a thing is going to read a little differently than a guy doing a thing. Also, because of the above, femslash is going to be written differently than het is going to be written differently than slash. People are also socialized to see a person differently depending on their sexual orientation, so there's also the layer of queer pairing vs straight pairing.

And sometimes our real life preferences come in. Sometimes you can relate better to one gender than the other, and you prefer ships with somebody you feel is in some way like you. Sometimes your sexual orientation comes into play, and you want to read fic where you're attracted to one of the characters involved... or both. Or you want to read about someone with the same sexual orientation as you, because you relate better to a queer or straight couple.

And sometimes you just like what you like for no reason, and that's okay, too.
