I don't know about other people, but I get severe secondhand embarrassment when I see someone crying, even when it's on-screen. I saw Shame earlier this week, and when Fassbender's character started to cry at this one scene, I just glanced around nervously at the other people in the theater to avoid looking at the screen. I don't know what it is, but people crying makes me so freaking uncomfortable, which is probably why I'm not partial to weepy characters.

Yes, secondhand embarrassment for me too. Sometimes when I see a character cry it makes me want to cry, so I'm desperately trying to hold back. If not, without fail I'll get the urge to rub my eye, cheek or side of my face. I don't want to because I'm nervous the people around me will think I'm crying and brushing tears. It's all stupid, but it makes me not really like characters that cry a lot either.

Exactly this. To me it's like... singing to someone in a movie. I have to mute or fastforward. Especially since a lot of the times they have characters crying over ridiculous things... and a part of me is going, "... why are you crying over that?"
