People to seem to react negatively to it because crying is coded as weakness to a lot of people, so they get annoyed with a character for being 'weak'. Although a lot of it is to do with them projecting their own issues, or rather the issues that society has bashed into them, about their own weaknesses.

(Disclaimer: I don't think there's anything about crying or showing any kind of emotion that's weak, but I also had to/still have endure a lot of distain for any time I've become emotional in front of the men in my family for being 'weak' or 'dramatic' for crying.)

Sorry, had to do it. But anyway, you know how it goes, crying is a sign of weakness as far as most people are concerned and they don't like their heroes weak. Just box up your emotions and be repressed and it's all good. Or something.

It's not always the case that people hate crying characters. I would not be the slightest bit surprised if there's an appreciation blog out there for Dean Winchester's frequent single tear of man pain. He's truly turned it into an art form (and I fully invite gif spam).

I don't know about other people, but I get severe secondhand embarrassment when I see someone crying, even when it's on-screen. I saw Shame earlier this week, and when Fassbender's character started to cry at this one scene, I just glanced around nervously at the other people in the theater to avoid looking at the screen. I don't know what it is, but people crying makes me so freaking uncomfortable, which is probably why I'm not partial to weepy characters.

Not always true. A lot of people I know have a fetish for whenever one of Doug Walker's characters break down crying, mainly the Nostalgia Critic.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Going anon, because lol personal issues or whatever.

Now a large part of this is cultural (guessing you're American?), but crying is just an incredibly emotionally intimate act. It's leaving absolutely everything entirely bare, and putting everyone around you in an incredibly awkward situation. How do you think your outburst is making them feel?

It's basically the height of selfishness. If you really need to do it, you do it alone.

I think, like a lot of people, crying is socially seen as a weakness. I mean, I agree with you, because I hate that emotion is often seen as being "weak", but that's just how it's seen, socially.

I agree, particularly because I used to do it myself. Once I realized it was out of a lot of self-hatred (I once worked so hard to force myself not to cry in public that I started hyperventilating uncontrollably) and kind of unhealthy as fuck not to let your feelings out, I chilled a lot about characters that cry often. Of course, now I get extra pissed when characters look down on crying...

(One of many reasons why Hugo was amazing- Hugo starts crying and tries to hide it, and Isabelle says "There's nothing wrong with crying, you know.")

I am very passionate and my feelings can swing in various directions. So, I can relate to crying a lot. My future sister-in-law teases me over it because she says she can get me to cry at least once when she comes to visit. It's true. I don't find anything wrong with crying with characters with the exception of Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell. Holy shit, that grew tiresome and I disliked her character. It wasn't that her ability to cry at a drop of a hat was weak; I think it was because it was as if that was all she was capable of doing. Just to mope and cry.

This really annoys me too, especially in stories where it makes total sense for the character to be crying all the time

This may be more...personal than anything, but for me it's just that crying, no matter how fake/fictional, always makes me really uncomfortable. Like, to the point of feeling kind of sick.

I myself cry a fuckton, so it might just be some screwed-up sense of empathy, but it just makes my skin crawl every time.

Sorry, OP.

I don't really get it either, but I have the opposite thing. I love characters that cry, since I like that they have weaknesses to them. It makes them more relatable to me.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, a lot of crying can come across as melodramatic. It's nice that these characters have emotions, but sometimes it feels so overdone it just leaves me cold.

Not saying that's true for this character, because I don't know who it is.

Some people IRL (and some characters) who cry a lot are doing it to be manipulative. I have big problems with this because my mother is the kind of person who does that. You try to tell her something true (that she doesn't want to hear) or that you're going to do something she disapproves of (that doesn't affect her at all, when you're an adult) and there go the waterworks! She also has been known to pretend-faint and once pretend-have a heart attack, which I will never forgive her for because I knew she was faking and my little brother didn't.

But if that's not the case, I'm not sure what it is.

Because crying = weakness and weakness is a sin according to a good chunk of fans.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
i don't like it when it's self-pitying and done for lack of anything better to do. like. pull yourself together and go do something about it!

idk, man. i personally don't like to cry because it makes me feel shitty and it makes my whole body hurt, because when i cry i get into the full-on breathless sobbing hysterics mode, and it's just no fun at all. i think a lot of us have been socialized into believing it shows weakness, though. my therapist had to repeatedly tell me this year that crying is okay and there's nothing wrong with it, but i still felt like a baby for it. it takes a while to break that kind of thought pattern.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't hate characters who cry. But as someone who has never actually really cried (been teary a few times, but not often), I relate more to characters who don't cry. And that applies to both male and female characters. Although, if anything, I tend to like female characters who don't cry and male characters who do because they are going against the stereotypes.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Many people have difficulty relating to the emotions of people who are not themselves, and even more people have difficulty relating to the emotions of fictional characters, since they're not real. So you hear a lot of people complaining about characters being too emotional, even in situations where they themselves would be that emotional.

It's something I've never quite understood myself, but I tend to be more empathetic than the average person, so relating to the pain of fictional characters comes easier for me than others, I think.

I hate it when anyone whines or cries too much, fictional and real, alike. It just annoys the shit out of me. I want them to focus on SOLVING their problem, not whining about it like a little bitch.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason is that in visual media, at least, crying is one of the most difficult things for an actor to convey realistically in a way that doesn't seem forced or silly. Real crying isn't pretty or graceful or easy to watch.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on the person/context, but yeah, IA. Like, I didn't love Jack on Lost, but it wasn't because he cried a lot. Shit, if I had his life, I'd cry a lot too.

People ranges of empathy for fictional characters vary. Some people feel as if they're in the character's shoes, which is different than feeling like a in the moment bystander. Some people tend more towards sympathy than empathy, which is me, since I am more okay with people crying tv than real life. Some people can't feel any of these things for situations they've haven't been close to.

Mostly I think people feel a lot of things when they encounter crying. A lot of times annoyance is one of those emotions. People are much more willing to express this annoyance when the target people's hurt can't effect them.
