I think the key words in this secret to me is "A LOT".

I love it when characters have a poignant breakdown, whether in public or not. But if they are crying over every little thing? Yeeeaaaah. I kinda want to smack them upside the head and tell them to get over it.

From my own personal standpoint; I struggle with depression. There was a period of time I was crying every other day. But even then I would retreat to my room, or only break down in front of my family. It wasn't a time of outside stress, but of personal crisis. As in 'I broke off a unhealthy friendship, had no clue what my future would be, and had nothing to call mine' personal crisis. It resolved itself and I moved on.

When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, which was by far a more drastic experience, I only cried once. It was a flat out wail when I was in my dorm.

I think my main problem is that with a lot of fictional characters who cry a lot, we don't get their thought process. I think crying over, say, a stubbed toe or a minor mistake is stupid... unless I see the thought process which shows all the things that relate to that. I cried over burtn french fries once, but it wasn't JUST about the fries. It was about fries, a REALLY bad day, a dead-end job interview, and a thousand tiny little things at once.

I find characters who cry over little things weak, because I can't identify with that as to me those are things to LAUGH at. Why waste the energy crying? You are only damaging yourself and making other people miserable when you stick yourself in that cycle. There are more worthwhile things to cry about.

I do like it if crying is led up to well though. If we are shown how the issues build, get inside the characters head, etc.

What annoys me is that many people's conception of "crying a lot" seems to be if the character breaks down more than once or twice because horrible stuff keeps happening to them. Very rarely do characters cry over every little thing, unless you're supposed to be annoyed by them.
