I don't mind tears when the situation calls for it - someone dead or whatever. But characters who cry all the time (and it's normally women, in anime, which is frustrating because I tend to want to like female characters) bug the shit out of me. Why are you crying? I don't get it. Is there some back story where that dropped icecream symbolises your lost loved one? WHY ARE YOU CRYING. Now I feel all awkward and embarrassed because the fictional person is crying on TV and I might genuinely want to like the character, but then I can't because I keep cringing at their cry!face because it has no meaning.
Almost related rant. Why do women have to cry all the time in shows? Even the strong characters. It takes away the impact when they do cry over their dead partner if they cry every time they bruise a shin*. Am I somehow meant to identify with this woman because she cried? I don't need tears over nothing to like a character...and why tears in excess? Why can't it be discrete, quiet or with dignity? Why does it so often have to be loud, blatant and embarrassing?
Okay wow apparently this is some kind of ~trigger~ or deep emotional annoyance I experience about characters crying. I had no idea it pissed me off that much.
*This is an exaggerated examples. As far as I'm aware, there's no show where someone cries at every bruised shin. I hope
