Many people have difficulty relating to the emotions of people who are not themselves, and even more people have difficulty relating to the emotions of fictional characters, since they're not real. So you hear a lot of people complaining about characters being too emotional, even in situations where they themselves would be that emotional.

It's something I've never quite understood myself, but I tend to be more empathetic than the average person, so relating to the pain of fictional characters comes easier for me than others, I think.

It's startling to see how many people have a surprising lack of empathy, and yes, it is scary. Maybe I'm being too cynical, though.

Most people who criticize criers aren't hypocrites. Why are you making assumptions about people? How do you know they themselves would be that emotional in that situation? They could have a totally different reaction.

Also I know many people lose patience with a character that is that way because they're young. Once the viewer passes that age it's hard to sympathize with a whiny teenager. See: Shinji from Evangelion.

Well, of course I don't know how other people are going to behave. What I meant was that they might react the same way, not that they would or that I know better than them what their reaction would be. But people sometimes don't know how they would react to a situation until they are in it, and I think it's easy to criticize someone from a distance.

I have never seen Evangelion, but I've heard a lot about it and I think Shinji is supposed to be a whiny teenager, because teenagers ARE that way, at least most of them are. And doesn't he have some other issues? It sounds like the kind of show where people are all emotionally unhealthy.

A lot of it is because people think that "well, I wouldn't break down and cry if I were them!"

It's a pride thing, and a projection thing (you see your greatest faults and fears reflected in other people).
