The funny thing about that is that Lancelot wasn't even originally part of 'real Arthurian mythology.' Personally I'm glad they're not sticking to that depiction of the love triangle, because I've never liked it or Lancelot (French Gary Stu) in the legends, and I don't like the idea of it in the show either. The actors have terrible chemistry, their interaction is cringe-worthy, and Lancelot himself is cardboard/Gwen becomes cardboard around him. I'm so pleased that they seem to be sticking to Gwen/Arthur and writing Gwen as faithful (when not enchanted, that is).

And I ship Merthur.

I never understood the big deal about Lancelot, either. I mean, I didn't dislike him, but I do think he was pretty much a Gary Stu, and I could never take him seriously as a love interest for Gwen when he only appeared once a season (not counting Lancelot du Lac because that wasn't the real Lancelot). If he'd been a regular and the love triangle had developed over several seasons, it would be another story, but with him appearing so sporadically and him and Gwen both being portrayed as unwaveringly noble and selfless, an affair just wouldn't have made sense IMO.

that's the thing that gets me, i feel like they could've made it made sense... like, they were going to build it up to that, and the fact that they didn't is just like...... "Okay, so he was there and now he's dead, and they both remain flawless individuals?" tbqh i never really gave a fuck about lancelot but SO MUCH INTERESTING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT MISSED OUT ON FOR GWEN. whyyyyyy

Me neither. I don't ship Arthur/Gwen, but I still like both of them as characters. Lancelot bugs me too much to seriously ship him with anyone.

ooooh Legend!Lancelot is totally a French Gary Stu. YES to that perfect term.

Despite that, I was always used to thinking that Merlin was extremely AU, and that they'd eventually work out a happy cartoonish ending for everyone while only casually trying to reference the myths. It's sort of why I'm okay with the really inconsistent and awful writing. So seeing how they failed to utilise the Lancelot character makes me wonder why they even bothered to have him in the first place if he was only a barely-there and unconvincing plot device.

No, same. And yeah I forgive a lot from the show because it's kind of like a popcorn show for me. It's fun to watch and vastly entertaining, but it's not exactly that good a lot of the time. And yeah, exactly. It makes me wonder if they'd originally planned on doing more with him and then scheduling conflicts happened or something.

Same here. But I've never liked Guinevere either, so I shipped them in a "let's pair off the cheating Gary Stu with the cheating Mary Sue and send them both packing" way.

And I don't ship Merthur.

Really? I think that's the first time I hear this. :) She doesn't really do anything other than look pretty, be the perfect lady and give knights her blessing, so there really isn't much to like imo.

This may be true, but it takes a lot to get me to dislike a character? Being kind of uninteresting isn't really enough.
