I understand that this is a show vs legend thing, but I don't actually watch Merlin, so I'm not really understanding. Could someone summarize the specifics, please?

The OP is basically saying that the people who are ranting about Gwen/Lance not happening are just butthurt Merlin/Arthur fans using "BUT THEY BETRAYED THE REAL LEGEND!!1!" as an excuse to rage because their ship got "sunk" by Arthur/Gwen, which is just ridiculous. The show is full on slash fangirl fanservice. Merlin/Arthur is unsinkable, and not in the Titanic-sense.

Merlin/Arthur fans are extremely butthurt over Lancelot/Gwen being portrayed as a temporary enchantment which leads to, among other things, Lancelot's demise since it means Gwen won't run off with Lancelot and clear the playing field for Merlin.

Cue much wailing over the show not being true to the source material (uh, which one?) and about how the show has ruined the center of the legends (funny, not every story about King Arthur had Guenevere committing adultery with Lancelot) and Chrétien de Troyes MUST be rolling over in his grave (where if they had ever read Lancelot du Lac, you'd realize that it's mostly a farce comedy...)
