The way they've managed the "love triangle" is actually one of my favorite things about Merlin. For once I actually like Lancelot, which is incredibly surprising. I found the way that Gwen's been drawn to both them to be far more believable/interesting than in the well known version.

*shrugs* I like Arthur/Gwen. I like Merlin/Arthur.

'Love' isn't quite the word I'd use, but I'm glad that the stupid love triangle was resolved in a way that a) didn't make Gwen cheat on Arthur and thereby getting all the mysoginistic hate of the fandom (because let's face it, Gwen would have gotten most of the hate, not Lancelot), b) didn't make Lancelot and Gwen betray Arthur, and c) didn't leave Arthur looking like an idiot.

The magical bracelet/necromancy thing may have been stupid (and to be honest I would have preferred it if they had just left the whole love triangle out, or left it at Lancelot dying in 4x02), but at least it left everyone their dignity and didn't make any of the three of them into sudden douches.

(Yeah, I'm not a big fan of that part of the "original" legends.)

And for once, Gwen getting most of the hate would have been deserved, because Lancelot and Arthur weren't bff in Merlin, so her betrayal would, in fact, have been way worse.

Not in Malory, no. Malory's Guinevere was trapped in a loveless marriage and the fact she could produce no heirs was only making it worse. But Lancelot had no excuse.

But Lancelot was still one one of Arthur's most trusted knights. And the show also did make a point about how noble Lancelot was, it's one of the things Arthur admired most about him. Yes, Gwen would have been at fault too, but it takes two to tango, and if the affair had happened Lancelot would have betrayed Arthur just as much as Gwen, IMO. Lancelot and Arthur might not have been bffs on Merlin, but as I said, Arthur trusted Lancelot. I'd go even so far as say that Lancelot was the knight Arthur trusted/respected most, because of his nobleness.

Or at least that's how I interpreted the few episodes we had with Lancelot.

The whole love triangle thing was just a mistake from the very beginning, IMO.

Yes, but they did NOT develop the close personal relationship Arthur developed with Gwen. Merlin's Arthur for sure trusts Gwen more than he trusts Lancelot. She's a bigger presence in his life.

It's the close personal relationship that makes Lancelot's betrayal in Malory's version so inexcusable. It was backstabbing at its finest.

The whole love triangle thing was just a mistake from the very beginning, IMO.

I love it in the legends. Love it. It's one of the things that make it unique imo instead of a run of the mill Disney princess fairytale. The King of Kings, THE ONE, does NOT have a perfect marriage, does NOT produce a true heir, gets backstabbed like in most good epics. And the greates wizard of all time FAILS. I think it's amazing, personally.

I love it in the legends.

Well, that's the crux of our problem, I guess. I think I already mentioned that I kind of always hated the love triangle/betrayal in the legends. :P

I guess the two of us just have too different character interpretations for us to see eye to eye, especially with regards to what happened during that year between s3 and s4.

I found the way that Gwen's been drawn to both them to be far more believable/interesting than in the well known version.

What version are you talking about? Guinevere is not drawn to Arthur in the "well-known" version (Mallory). It's an arranged marriage.
