(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)Also, with regards to the anime, it was already known that there was most likely going to be a sequel to the first gen. (See the first episode's Ho-oh cameo.) So on a meta level, whenever someone in the anime mentions that there are over 150 Pokémon, they're really just pulling a subtle Sequel Hook/hinting at the existence of another generation.
In-universe, I like to think that a lot of the characters already know about the fact that there's craploads of Pokémon in the world; they're just not telling Ash for some reason. (Probably because his brain would implode.)
