As someone actually in the fandom, I can tell you that you're correct there. There really are hundreds of places to discuss things like this, both on and off LJ. Most of them are literally a five-second Google search away.

Uhm.... Mew? I mean, Mew's kinda known, from what I gathered. That could very well be #150 for the general populace of the Pokémon universe.
I'm also not really getting why this is a secret.

Also, with regards to the anime, it was already known that there was most likely going to be a sequel to the first gen. (See the first episode's Ho-oh cameo.) So on a meta level, whenever someone in the anime mentions that there are over 150 Pokémon, they're really just pulling a subtle Sequel Hook/hinting at the existence of another generation.

In-universe, I like to think that a lot of the characters already know about the fact that there's craploads of Pokémon in the world; they're just not telling Ash for some reason. (Probably because his brain would implode.)

Yeah, I get why in terms of ~gameplay~ Mewtwo has to be #150 and Mew has to be #151, but it really should be the other way around. This has probably bothered me for my entire life.

I can just imagine Professor Oak getting on TV (or radio, he has that show in GSC) and saying that there are 150 pokemon. It would probably be picked up by everyone quoting a particular statistic, just like in real life.

150 doesn't include Mewtwo. If anything, you should object to the fact that Mew, not Mewtwo, is the 151st Pokemon.

But in the games, Team Rocket is never connected to Mewtwo.

It's amazing how many people miss that.
