I got Fake thrown at me from every serious fan when I asked for BL recs, and it was certified shit. If that's the best the genre has to offer, I don't see why I should bother wasting money on the less famous ones. I'll stick to fanfic, thanks.

This. FAKE reads like a particularly shitty Law & Order fanfiction. What the hell people see in it, I'll never know. It doesn't even have porn as a failsafe.

Naruto might be shallow and (YMMV) dumb, but it's got charm and it is a well-crafted comic, for all its faults.

Fake is shallow and silly and occasionally funny, but mostly just full of storytelling clichés being played out by paper-thin characters in banal plots.

Your opinion of Naruto is probably what fans of FAKE think about FAKE. I for one, can't appreciate Naruto.

I don't care particularly for Naruto, but the point I was hoping to make and which seems to have gone over the heads of most people on this thread is that quality isn't about liking a piece or not. Twilight isn't a good novel, The Last Airbender isn't a good film, and Fake isn't a good manga. Sure, Fake probably works just fine if the only thing you want from a manga is to see men kissing each other, but every time I try to read it, I get too annoyed by all the things it gets wrong to appreciate it.

FWIW, I've had the same happening with things that aren't BL (o hai thar clamp). I want to read good stories, and I have to agree with the troll downthread on one point: I have a hard time taking self-proclaimed BL fans completely seriously, because what little I've seen of the genre has been shit.

What I'm saying is, there ARE some good BL titles out there. I'm not an active fan any more (I prefer slash fic tbh - easier to find good fics in a whole bunch of BL).

Not every BL fan is a fangirling teenager out to see cocks and stuff. You yourself said you've seen "little" of it - yes, it's true that there IS a lot of crap, but there are good stories as well.

Some users have been saying something which I think anons are not picking up on - BL has grown a lot in the past few years - there are several authors now which I can say are writing for a more mature audience with better storytelling and characters. basso, for one. Her stories involve politicians. Est Em is a pretty good author too.

I like FAKE. It's a cute piece of fluff. There are parts I really dislike, but overall I find it an enjoyable experience when I want something light.
