Don't worry about it. It's a fandom fad to hate on yaoi.

Just go find whatever version of this suits your fandom/tastes and move on.

I'll let you in on a little secret. People think it's cool to judge and hate on BL without haven't ever read much of it because it makes them feel like their taste is superior. Especially, but not limited to, people in predominantly Western fandoms.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreeing that it's become a fad to hate on yaoi and a lot of people don't really know what they're talking about. Also, statements like "yaoi has the same cliches over and over again, blushing ukes and stoic semes etc" might have carried more truth about five years ago, but if you're reading more recent stuff, it's pretty obvious that things have started to change. I think there is a lot more variety in BL these days, and it's really not hard at all to find things that aren't like Gravitation.

One thing that might affect your search is preferences in art styles, however. I'm saying this because a lot of the manga in your secret have art styles that I don't find appealing, so I probably wouldn't read them. The art is really important to me.

Some have mangaka instead of titles on them because the titles are too long (OP is lazy) or the author has other stuff worth looking into.

People make inaccurate sweeping generalizations about things they don't like. (Yes I'm aware that this is a sweeping generalization that doesn't apply to everybody.)
You could easily find tons of people outside of Japanese entertainment fandom - or even fandom in general - who would say the same thing about romance in general, as a genre. "All romance stories are the same" "They use the same tired old tropes" "They're all old tired sexist fantasies" etc etc etc

I do not particularly care for yaoi so I cannot comment specifically on the works posted, but I recognize that it's entirely a personal preference and not something that makes me have better taste than anybody else. I dislike a lot of romance stories, but I have also loved plenty of works from that genre. I like a lot of things (like anime) that are commonly dismissed with "it's all the same crap with the same tropes, it's all shit."
So don't worry about it. Just enjoy what you like.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly it's totally a taste thing. I only like some stuff but a lot of people like other shit. It's harder for me to find bl or yaoi that I actually enjoy. If you enjoy it, why the fug not!!

I got Fake thrown at me from every serious fan when I asked for BL recs, and it was certified shit. If that's the best the genre has to offer, I don't see why I should bother wasting money on the less famous ones. I'll stick to fanfic, thanks.

Eh, I don't see why you need to care what some random person in the interweb thinks though. I'm fully aware that a lot of them have the seme/uke thing that is totally ~horrible~ and ~unrealistic~but I don't give a fuck I enjoy it anyway. Come at me bros.

I find your lack of Ike Reibun, Yuki Shimizu and Mizukami Shin mangas sad.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Alrighty, OP: full confession. I'm not as familiar with the BL genre as I could be because I did stop reading it, years ago. I sort of got in on the ground floor (attended the very first Y-con and everything) of the yaoi/BL craze jumping shores. I realize slash had been around for decades before that, but I never really knew about it. I got into it through video game doujinshi, and at the time vidya was still predominantly Japanese. It fed into fandoms like X/1999 and Yami no Matsuei, and from thence to yaoi/BL proper.

But as the years past, I really did get sick of seeing the same cliches over and over again, and shifted more toward slash, or very specific video game doujinshi in fandoms that shied away from those tropes.

So for me it is rather from a position of ignorance, having missed the most recent years of the genre. There were always exceptions of course, but the vast and overwhelming majority of it was the same shit, over and over. I did notice that doujinshi (in particular video game doujinshi) were starting to shift toward something a bit more slash-like with more variety (much to the grumbling of a few older djka I know about us tainting their fandoms with our horrible gaijin perversions - back in the day no one ever ukes were ukes and semes were semes and no one ever switched! damn kids, get off their lawn, etc. etc) but I'd never put two and two together and assumed changes were going on as a whole. I've gotten some great recs from this site, however, that show me otherwise.

But I'm honestly pretty happy sticking with slash and video game doujinshi, for the most part. My latest fandom has gay dudes in it, holy shit. Male djka I mean. Boy was I ever shocked to see them at Comiket. Plenty of gay men at Y-Con, but J-fandom tends to be less... hrm. Open. In any case they definitely do not write your standard BL, for the most part.

And, like, it's your taste, man. Everyone is entitled to like what they want. I'm sure there are good BL stories out there, but BL tends to have similar romantic dynamics and I never liked any of them even if they were done well.

I do agree with others that it's popular to hate on yaoi/BL.
