Alrighty, OP: full confession. I'm not as familiar with the BL genre as I could be because I did stop reading it, years ago. I sort of got in on the ground floor (attended the very first Y-con and everything) of the yaoi/BL craze jumping shores. I realize slash had been around for decades before that, but I never really knew about it. I got into it through video game doujinshi, and at the time vidya was still predominantly Japanese. It fed into fandoms like X/1999 and Yami no Matsuei, and from thence to yaoi/BL proper.

But as the years past, I really did get sick of seeing the same cliches over and over again, and shifted more toward slash, or very specific video game doujinshi in fandoms that shied away from those tropes.

So for me it is rather from a position of ignorance, having missed the most recent years of the genre. There were always exceptions of course, but the vast and overwhelming majority of it was the same shit, over and over. I did notice that doujinshi (in particular video game doujinshi) were starting to shift toward something a bit more slash-like with more variety (much to the grumbling of a few older djka I know about us tainting their fandoms with our horrible gaijin perversions - back in the day no one ever ukes were ukes and semes were semes and no one ever switched! damn kids, get off their lawn, etc. etc) but I'd never put two and two together and assumed changes were going on as a whole. I've gotten some great recs from this site, however, that show me otherwise.

But I'm honestly pretty happy sticking with slash and video game doujinshi, for the most part. My latest fandom has gay dudes in it, holy shit. Male djka I mean. Boy was I ever shocked to see them at Comiket. Plenty of gay men at Y-Con, but J-fandom tends to be less... hrm. Open. In any case they definitely do not write your standard BL, for the most part.

I always thought there would be male djkas I mean..I've seen some bara doujins before but wow I have never seen any at comiket

They exist!!!

There was one in the Atlus (DS:RK) fandom as well, but he was one half of a two-person circle, and it was the woman who did the art, and he did the writing. He showed up to Comiket/CCT a few times, and before I worked up the nerve to have a conversation with him I just assumed he was someone's boyfriend, lol.

I know Resident Evil has a few as well, but I've never seen them at events. But CoD? (Or Western games in general, actually, even Assassin's Creed.) Full of the gentlemen. I went to C80 this summer and it was almost 50:50 - and so, so many of them weren't writing gen, they were writing the gay like everyone else. Madness. But I suppose when you look at most Western vidya dudes, especially compared to Japanese ones, they really are borderline bara.

Mind = blown.

Also COD doujins? Wat.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Fahahahah there are Gears of War doujins. Of course there are CoD doujins.

They make elite tactical hi-definition slash goggles these days that let you see two dicks together in anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Damn bro, I have been out of the doujin circle for too long.

I gotta find some of this shit. I didn't know it was possible.

One Gears doujinshi is up on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gears-War-Doujinshi-Marcus-x-Baird-Gears-Never-Die-/380354282061?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588ee1c24d) by final KANFUL. She also sells on k-books (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gears-War-Doujinshi-Marcus-x-Baird-Gears-Never-Die-/380354282061?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588ee1c24d) if you've got an agent or are ever in the home country. (Her personal website is here (http://stl.sakura.ne.jp/top1.html) if you're interested.)

As for the CoD crowd, they're largely on pixiv. Just search CoD or MW2 and you'll find plenty of their art and circle cuts for events.

Thnx :D

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
There are some fantastic CoD artists (http://www.xdcu.com/acod/) here in foreigner land as well, if you're interested. But I'm sure that's a lot less surprising.

And any time, always happy to spread the love :3

...If there are Death Knights of Krynn doujins (or Dragonlance doujins in general), I may have to offer my nonexistent firstborn as a sacrifice or some shit.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
If there are I've never seen it personally. For one I don't think those games even got Japanese releases, for two it's old as dirt, and for three for the most part until very recently most Japanese gamers never really gave our stuff, especially the PC variety, the time of day. Classic RPGs in the motherland: the low single-digit FFs and the original Megami Tensei.

But, who knows. Maybe lurking in the 105 yen section of "other" on the games shelf in some Mandarake, somewhere, is a DKK doujinshi. Or Betrayal at Krondor doujinshi, yeaaaaah.

Doing research related to my field of specialty spending way too much money on pornography, I'll have a look.

*Next time I'm

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I figured it was a longshot. I just want some well-drawn Raistlin/Dalamar smut *shifty eyes*

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a quick google reveals that Dragonlance stuff is definitely out there (http://www4.ocn.ne.jp/~daad/doujin.html) so who knows, maybe it really is lurking the Mandarake bargain bin.
