My issue is not that 'it isn't true to the myth BAAAAAAAWWWW!' thing, mostly because I am a fan of the ORIGINAL Arthurian myths. (They involve Arthur not being a king but a kick butt traveling warrior, a LOT more fae, Gwen being a fae herself, and so on. Though there is no Merlin, which makes me sad. He was a later addition.)

The myths have so many different sources that it is insane. I am still waiting for someone to call/spell Excalibur Caledfwlch. Or actually have it be based off the roman style one-handed sword it would have been at the time.

... I am a myth nut obsessed with origins who is writing a modern mystery fantasy that involves Excalibur. I am a bit of a geek about these things.

ANYWAY... *Ahem*

I am ticked off that they didn't do the original myths justice in the way they had the Gwen/Lance romance pan out. At this stage Gwen and Lance had been in the Castle together for awhile, along with Arthur. It would have been interesting to see some results of them being all thrown together in-between seasons. The Gwen and Lance romance is arguably even more legendary then the Gwen and Arthur one. I recognize that it is a kids show, but I wondered why they couldn't have shown it in a different manner.

Plus, as others have said, the lack of chemistry between Gwen and Arthur is annoying. I think they could have been done well if the writers had spent a little bit more time developing them. But it came off to me like Arthur/Gwen was the kind of romance you find in High School where the Lance/Gwen one had a more epic, high-fantasy feel to it. Maybe it was all the soul-searing looks?

I love Gwen. I think she is a poorly used character and I wish I could see more of her being a epic Blacksmith's daughter, and the sister of a Knight, AND a strong-hearted young women who is her own person. Who survived a brother abandoning the family and a father murdered.

Now, I do ship Merlin/Arthur and Lance/Gwen, but I also ship Merlin/Gwen, Lance/Arhur, and Gwain/Everyone, so I don't really have a 'OTP'. (...I'm sorry, Gwen/Arthur is just not a personality dynamic I favor. I think there is a lot to mine there if you do like that dynamic, so I don't begrudge those who love it. *shrug*) But I just wish that with so much potential in the vast mythology to dig out, and the chance for a great deal of complexity with the characters, that the writers would have done more with one of the most well known romances of mythology.

BTW, I complained a bit to my friends about the way Mordred panned out too. Would have liked it if he was at least related to Arthur in some way...

But nothing made me rage as much as Arthur stealing the Green Knight tale (via him and Morgeuse) which should have been saved for Gwain. Dude, you do not screw with my favorite myth ever, or my favorite knight. >:( (And this was BEFORE Gwain even showed up!)
