F!S I need your help. my 10-year-old niece just posted this on Facebook:

"wwell, as you may havve noticed, i havve changed my name and speaking style on fb. it is based on my patron troll from Homestuck, which is off of motherglubbing MSPA. so check it out if you wwish to learn more. thanks. (shut up fef!)"

can she be saved? is it too late?? is she going to turn into one of you Homestuck people???

it's too late

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Don't help her. In a few years time, she'll look back and experience a beautiful amount of embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Anything you try right now will only make her cling to it harder. Just let it run its course and try to curb only genuinely dangerous or offensive behavior.

If you can/the opportunity arises, explain to her that kidding around on the internet is okay, but let her know that that kind of behavior is very annoying in real life, and that even on the internet, nothing is 100% private, and that she should keep in mind that hacking into facebook accounts is not difficult, so be careful with what she posts there and who might see it -and who might see it who might know people she doesn't want to hear about what she wrote.

be careful with what she posts there and who might see it

I posted this to F!S knowing that her account is under tight security and there are a zillion degrees between me IRL and my LJ.

but honestly, her wall is mostly lolcats and silly videos, so I'm not worried about anyone using this against her. I'm just worried about this fandom.

Ah, I see.

I would give it two or three more years for the story to be complete. The more, er, far-reaching sector of the fandom should be fading away by the time there is no more story left. Hopefully liking Homestuck won't be so "cool" by then, or she might even lost interest before that.

Your niece is reading MSPA at ten? I mean, I guess there's nothing there that you can't find in the main portions of the internet, but that still strikes me as...odd.

To answer your question, no. Once you go Homestuck you never go back.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
what does her age have to do with it? is MSPA really adult or something?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
It has very adult language and violence.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really adult, but it's not something I picture ten-year-olds liking. When I was ten, I probably would have thought it too long and hard to follow. Plus the characters, especially Karkat, have...strong language. But that's something you can find everywhere else, I suppose. Probably the only difference between swearing in Homestuck and swearing in other places a ten-year-old could frequent is that Homestuck is generally more creative about it.

And most of the characters have died at least once, although the different blood colors look much less gory than red. (That's what I get for clicking the post button so quickly!)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Adult language, violence, children getting off on their own strangulation, one scene of mind-control dub-con pirate/slave porn. Also the character she's imitating is a tool that thinks everyone owes him a relationship and ends up getting chopped in half with a chainsaw. At least make her focus on a different character.

she's a goner
