Good job they're not, then!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah!

Although they can look pretty cool in real life too. Especially those design ones.

This guy sort of looks like his dripped kool aid on his back.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
same

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Except that they lose their meaning with reasoning like that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with just wanting to change your look. Doesn't need a meaning.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
So get a tattoo then. Purposefully inflicting pain on yourself just so you can look cool is more than a little insulting to people like me who carry major scars from accidents.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Getting a tattoo is purposely inflicting pain on yourself.

Also what.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Purposefully inflicting pain on yourself just so you can look cool

... isn't this essentially getting a tattoo? Tattoos are not painfree. And the majority of people get them done despite the pain/complications to commemorate something, not to look cool, so how would intentional scarring be all that different?

Is someone's scar inherently more worthy because they tripped over a bench and cut their arm on a brick rather than someone who did it with a purpose?

Not that I support cutting yourself to look cool, but it seems like a rather ridiculous thing to defend...

I get you, cool cat Jeff, but not everyone imbues the same meaning to em I guess.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've got this vertical scar that crosses the center of one of my eyebrows, down just a bit below the brow bone but above the eyelid. I tend to wear a hat all the time to hide it, although it essentially makes me look like I've been in a fight. According to other folk who get to see it, it makes me look like a badass (apparently).

Now, I didn't get it in a fight. I got it in an embarrassing way involving being an 8-year old dumbass, running, winter, a stop-light button, and my lunch. It's very much not a meaningful scar, even though by all rights it looks like one. I'm just saying not all scars have deep, tragic, forged from trials of awesome, or whatnot. Some of them are just downright stupid.

Then there's my knees and arms. Those are even stupider to talk about 8|
tl;dr my cool scar(s) is misleading

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been making poor word choices all over this thread.

"I'm just saying not all scars have deep, tragic, forged from trials of awesome, or whatnot. Some of them are just downright stupid."

For sure and I definitely have my share. :)

a lot people think they look pretty cool as they are though

see tumblr for evidence

Scarification. Look into it.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Some scars are pretty cool in real life. in a way, I really like some of mine.

However, I do not actually wish to advocate self-harm here.

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
At first I was like "Dude WTF is wrong with you" but then I remembered plastic surgery exists, and honestly I don't think it's much different. Hell if most scars actually looked like they do in anime/games/whatever there would probably plastic surgeons who specialized in that kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
At first I thought this was really stupid, but I can't really blame you. I've always thought scars were really cool. Whenever I would get hurt I'd always be excited hoping I would get a cool scar. Hell, I remember stabbing myself in the hand while trying to open a walnut and my reaction was "I hope a get a cool scar!" instead of "Holy shit, should I go to the hospital?!" Fortunately the cut wasn't anywhere near as deep as we originally thought, though I've always been disapointed that it left a really tiny scar.

Scars are cool, but don't go purposely hurting yourself just to get them, OP.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Cutting yourself to create scars is stupid. If you want scars, get it done by a professional. (I still side-eye that, but live and let live, I guess.)

And no, scars are generally not as cool looking as they are in media. I used to give my video game characters facial scars when the character creators allowed it. Then I got a huge scar on my face, across my right cheek from the inside corner of my right eye down to my jawbone. And I can tell you first hand that it is NOT COOL. Not even a little bit.

I'm getting treatment for it, and it's faded enough that I can kind of hide it with makeup now, but it's still pretty obvious. I can't imagine anyone wanting to do this to themselves on purpose.

[identity profile] zombieroadtrip.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a kid I thought this many times, mostly because all my favorite characters were scarred. Real life scars tend to look much less awesome. My biggest scar is on my leg and it's shaped like a snowman. There's... just no way to make that look badass.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, they can look as good as in the media, but it takes a lot of planning/precision, and possibly some make-up once it's healed depending on the look you're going for. Most of the time the X I have cut into my wrist looks ridiculous but sometimes it looks pretty cool.

Whatever you do, cutting wise, just please remember to be safe, OP. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This may or may not be self-harm, but I'm definitely thinking this is more body modification type thing.

If it's what you're into, there are bona fide professionals that do scarification. And with any body modifications, be careful and stick to the aftercare!

... slightly related, I've been looking into surgical means for gauges & earlobes, instead of stretching. I've stretched mine a few times myself and professionally, but upon meeting someone who had them sliced (not a hole cut out, but lobes cut and they heal around the gauge), I'm fascinated, and definitely considering it.
