Except that they lose their meaning with reasoning like that.

Nothing wrong with just wanting to change your look. Doesn't need a meaning.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
So get a tattoo then. Purposefully inflicting pain on yourself just so you can look cool is more than a little insulting to people like me who carry major scars from accidents.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Getting a tattoo is purposely inflicting pain on yourself.

Also what.

Purposefully inflicting pain on yourself just so you can look cool

... isn't this essentially getting a tattoo? Tattoos are not painfree. And the majority of people get them done despite the pain/complications to commemorate something, not to look cool, so how would intentional scarring be all that different?

Is someone's scar inherently more worthy because they tripped over a bench and cut their arm on a brick rather than someone who did it with a purpose?

Not that I support cutting yourself to look cool, but it seems like a rather ridiculous thing to defend...

I guess some people look at it a different way. This is how I see it.

Tattoos generally carry meaning and represent things an individual may care deeply about. At the same time, they are considered works of art. I have a few myself, I get it.

Scars are crude physical reminders on our bodies of our misfortunes in the past. They are unexpected. They are experiences. Stories. One of my best friends growing up got mauled by a dog when he was around 3 years old. It chewed up his face pretty bad and left him covered in scars that stayed with him as he got older. He was made fun of by fellow classmates for years and would never wish such a thing upon anybody. There's an amount of respect to be had there... respect I would lose when somebody says they would cut themselves because they wanted to look cool.

There is such a thing as scarification.
Also, a tattoo isn't painfree either.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'll admit "purposefully inflicting pain" wasn't the best choice of words, but it's not the center of my point either. Still, scarring and tattoos are two different types of pain. Of the tattoos I have, none have been painful enough to even make me flinch or grit my teeth. I think my friends have been in more pain watching me get the damn things than I have been sitting in the chair. On the other hand... branding, cutting, skinning... dnw on purpose.

DA

Where are your tattoos on your body? Because honestly, it all has to do with placement, touch of the artist (a light hand/heavy hand), and of course, personal pain tolerance.

My elbow made me cry like a bitch, but my friend was able to handle two different artists/sitting working on hers without a problem.

Not to lower the pain of branding and scarification -- but tattoos... are still intense.

Insulting? How is it insulting? I was in a bad car crash a year ago (an SVU hit me at seventy, totalling my car and flipping his over) and have noticeable burn scars down the inside of my left forearm. I'd assume someone with similar burns had been in an accident, but I wouldn't be insulted if that turned out not to be true. Have you never heard of scarification?

I don't think it's anyone's right to dictate what goes on another person's body if it's not copyright infringement.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not dictating the rights of what a person should/shouldn't do with their body. If you want to cut yourself because you want to look cool, fine, but I'm not going to advocate for you.

As far as feeling insulted goes, I don't have much response other than you and I simply do not agree. I hate every scar I have and try to cover them up as best I can. I guess it's just a little difficult for me to understand why anybody would want to do something like that to themselves.

Scarification is not the same thing as what the OP is talking about (in my eyes). Scarification to me is more of an extreme form of tattooing and can be done professionally. It's body modification. The picture in the secret doesn't look like scarification to me. The scars that characters in anime/manga/etc don't really resemble scarification either.

I get you, cool cat Jeff, but not everyone imbues the same meaning to em I guess.

I've got this vertical scar that crosses the center of one of my eyebrows, down just a bit below the brow bone but above the eyelid. I tend to wear a hat all the time to hide it, although it essentially makes me look like I've been in a fight. According to other folk who get to see it, it makes me look like a badass (apparently).

Now, I didn't get it in a fight. I got it in an embarrassing way involving being an 8-year old dumbass, running, winter, a stop-light button, and my lunch. It's very much not a meaningful scar, even though by all rights it looks like one. I'm just saying not all scars have deep, tragic, forged from trials of awesome, or whatnot. Some of them are just downright stupid.

Then there's my knees and arms. Those are even stupider to talk about 8|
tl;dr my cool scar(s) is misleading

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been making poor word choices all over this thread.

"I'm just saying not all scars have deep, tragic, forged from trials of awesome, or whatnot. Some of them are just downright stupid."

For sure and I definitely have my share. :)
