I think that the need to prove it canon stems from the wish to accepted as "real fans". Roddenberry's statements are just the fuel to that fire. The truth is that it could be canon an all over the place and there would still be people who dislike it and dislike the fans.

And in all honesty, people forget that there's so much evidence against the pairing too. One thing ethey like to forget is that Kirk's a ladies man. Yeah he can bisexual or whatever, but there's a word for it: cheating. Doesn't bode too well with relationships.

My starship Enterprise is a lot sluttier and somewhat seedier than people might think. For example, under the uniforms everyone is wearing leather bondage outfits.

Oh, I totally know people like that in real life. Good for them! I'm a bit like that, myself. I agree it'd be super out of character for Spock, though. And probably Kirk. Based on Kirk's relationship with Edith, I suspect he is one of those people who sleeps around alot while single but wouldn't cheat on his partner in a monogamous relationship.

In my headcanon, Kirk and Spock were attracted to each other in TOS, but repressed it and never. ever. ever. talked about it. So, Kirk was single and therefore free to seduce all the space babes he wanted without it being "cheating." It was only after the series ended and they were separated for all those years they finally admitted their feelings.

That's just my headcanon, though, so take it as you will :)

The only way I can see it working in TOS is exactly like that. There couldn't have been a romantic relationship between them during the five year mission, at least not during the time shown in TOS, it just wouldn't have worked.

Edith Keeler was the only woman that he was serious about, and a lot of the others where simply alien babes that he had to seduce in order to save the enterprise. There's even that one episode about the prison planet that housed a mind control devise where he all but told the flirty dame of the week to fuck off.

Yep yep chicks basically fall into three categories w/ Kirk:

1) old flame, and they usually kind of resent him for obsessing over his job
2) he's using them/under the influence of something/in the mirror 'verse
3) Edith and that whoops she's an android chick, both of whom he gets all lovey dovey about so yeah I wouldn't call that being a ladies' man

The city on the edge of forever, Requiem for methuselah, Carol Marcus, that some woman he dated in the academy... Also that chick from that one episode where everyone got hooked up. I'm too lazy to look these up, so you're gonna have to deal with it.

I know he used a lot of women and hardly loved many of them, but there are many women he fell in love with just because he fell in love with them. Besides, he still counts as a ladies' man no matter his motives.
