If you play WoW, you might enjoy Lord of the Rings Online (http://www.lotro.com/). It's free-to-play and the early, non-points-requiring quests are in the Shire and Bree areas. You get to "visit" the areas from the early part of the books... that might make them more interesting.

Brandywine is one of the biggest servers and they always have lots of low-level people around. Arkenstone is a good, medium-size one.
