I feel you, OP. I've tried over and over again to read those books - most of the time I can't get more than a few pages. One time I got really stubborn and actually made it about a third of the way into the first book. A big part of me wants to read them - I feel as if I'm not qualified to write a high fantasy novel without having read LotR.

Worst part of it: I don't have too much of a problem with the endless description, as so many people have mentioned - I've read worse in fanfics over the years, although it is frustrating. What kills me is that the punctuation is So. Effing. Archaic. Is it that way in anyone else's books? The dialogue is partitioned off with apostrophes for chrissake!

Uh...that's the way they do it in England. With the single quotes.
