My LOTR secret: I love the books and films for LOTR, but I've never been able to make it past the first chapter of The Hobbit.

i love the films, but i just can't deal with tolkien's writing style. i don't think it's that uncommon...?

I'm a hardcore Tolkienite so I should probably be really offended. (When I was 12 I attacked a boy in my class with my book when he said Harry Potter was better).

But, alas, I have mellowed as I have aged. Tolkien isn't for everyone, it's all the differences that makes the world an interesting place.

I'm glad you enjoyed the movies, I have friends who like them but haven't read the books, I just prattle on about the changes and background info, as they usually have a lot of questions they don't mind.

That being said, I've hung out with the purists and yes, we can be a bit snobby to movie!fans. So, I'm sorry if you've had to deal with that. You excited for the Hobbit films, OP?

Don't worry, OP. I was never fond of the books either (only made it halfway through the TT). He had a wonderful imagination and was an amazing world builder, but he wandered off on tangents constantly and never came back. It was really frustrating to read.

Though I only really like the second two movies. >.> The first one doesn't have enough action/fight scenes.

I never cared about Tolkien. Nor the books, nor the movies. I don't doubt they're good, just not my cup of tea. And trust me, I've tried.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry OP.
TBH I fell asleep during every attempt to ever watch the films or read the books.

I only ever actually enjoyed The Hobbit and a couple of parodies of lotr
ext_19953: (now remember boys: flies spread disease)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
hah, I love the books but I totally get not being able to stick em. I read super fast, so I can just sort of plow through even the parts that drag. The only bit here I legit don't understand is only really liking the first movie - BUT THAT'S WHY IT'S YOUR SECRET, NOT MINE. =) No judgement here.

(oblig, because I'm still not over it: OMFG, THE HOBBIT TRAILER. Do you feel me, Tolkien nerds of FS? DO YOU?!!!!!!!!! I THINK YOU DO)

It seems a bit sad that a fact about how someone's book/movie tastes happen to be different from Other People On The Internet has to be a secret.

It's okay, OP. The books are notoriously dense, what with the tangents another commenter mentioned, so they're not easy to get into. :)

As for the movies, haha, I don't blame you at all.

Skip to book II... the Shire is the hardest part of the books for me to get through but once they get to Rivendel, it's much better, IMO.

lol I love the books forever but even I can admit the first half of book one is pretty dull

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not as if Tolkien's writing hasn't been repeatedly critiqued as sluggish, overwrought, and naive over the last 50 years.

Ohh wait.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that weird, don't worry. :) I read the books up through the middle of Two Towers when looong chapters featuring the Ents derailed me. I'd maybe give Fellowship more of a chance because I really enjoyed that one, but it's totally cool (especially regarding LotR) to be a movie fan and not read the books.

[identity profile] addisongrey.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Agree completely. I don't think I could ever do a LoTR movie marathon or anything (and I have friends that do). Can't even stand a rewatch, they were just so dark (colour wise) and dreary and long the first time. Ngl have seen them all the once but not my thing. Elijah was very pretty though. Bought the book as a hardbacked omnibus coloured pictures and all because I thought it'd be good to read. Couldn't get pass the first 10 pages. It just gathers dust. *fist bump*

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Read the books once when I was 8, I enjoyed them but not enough to re-read or to retain more than the bare bones of the plot 12 years later. Started watching the movies when they were released but fell asleep every time, never bothered finishing.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I read the trilogy when I was 13*, when the first movie came out, because I was an impatient asshole that couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I genuinely enjoyed them, and totally acted uppity when I found out about the changes ("Tom Bombadil. Where are you !? D:<").

But that was the last time I read them, and I'm very certain I couldn't bother to try and power through them again. As a kid I had time and patience for anything. Non-discriminating taste basically. Not so much now. Although, weirdly, I still love The Hobbit and read it on occassion.
*lol edit: borked my age and thought it was 2013 for some reason.

[identity profile] kayleen-san.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, you're certainly not the only one. I loved "The Hobbit" but I could never get really far into "Fellowship" and therefore, never got into the rest of the books. I don't know why. I just couldn't do it.

I feel like I'm an oddball in my group sometimes because I just...don't care about the series and they're HUGE fans.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
The first 1/3rd of the first book is the only part I enjoyed. I've read them all.

I really liked The Hobbit though, so. :U

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love LotR and I actually enjoyed the books, but Tolkien's writing style just isn't for everyone. He can drag on and get a bit wordy at times.

[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry too much, OP. I fell asleep when I first tried to read FotR, and have pretty much forgotten to ever try the books again.

[identity profile] disembodied-cat.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I got so much crap from a bunch of brats the other day when I outright said I didn't care about LOTR.
And honestly - it's probably the ONLY nerdy thing out there (other than .. I guess most anime ..) that I don't get into. I feel kind of bad about it .. but it was mainly influenced from my dad. He thought the movies were boring, so did I. I tried to read The Hobbit, but it was terribly boring.
I might try again, I've been trying to read a lot more, but it's not on the top of my to read list. >_>

[identity profile] eralkfang.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
As a particularly hardcore Ringer, I feel you—if it's not your cuppa, it's not your cuppa.

But protip if you want some of my more passionate brethren off your back—it's not a trilogy, it's a single novel.
