Since people pointed out Saturday isn't enough time to see what LJ is doing with this or about this, moved the potential moving date to New Years' - 1/1/2012.

[Poll #1805208]

The other poll is closed and this one will be open until Dec 31st! You can edit your vote by going here.

As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.

1 - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=6261682#t6261682
http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up (with a handy link over to it), I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

4 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

5 - I'm aware workarounds are available - but those (or so I hear?) won't stay available for long. Also, those layouts have their own bugs. If someone can actually supply me with workable code that doesn't make long threads unreadable to change the layout, I'll give it a try.

6 - [livejournal.com profile] raemia has an FAQ up here: http://raemia.livejournal.com/18347.html

7 - Tried the LJ workaround, give me your thoughts? Also contains links to what FS would look like on DW. Feedback on either/both?

8 - http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/811020.html?thread=511056908#t511056908 A good summary of the whole thing here by [livejournal.com profile] demarafis.

JFC if you want to move then just move the bloody comm. It's like with the new posting times, you ask for people's opinions but make it obvious what you prefer and push people toward that. What's the point of asking, then?

Read long threads worse you mean. I had no problem clicking the expand button under the numbered comment and having the thread expand. Now you have to open it in a new page. You're "fix" has made it worse. If this is what it would be like on DW then my answer is an emphatic "oh hell no", give us the new livejournal content back.

No, this is not an improvement. I liked the old new-style, better. The Russians had done it a better turn.

we seem to have lost the option to expand threads on same page, this is bad it was far more convenient and the new lj layout of the expand on same page was brilliant. We've also lost the "new post" marker, that was a godsend.

Actually, using old lj after having seen new lj, I 100% support new lj. I miss it already, it had exactly what I was looking for. I shouldn't have to play "guess the new post", it should be capable of flagging it for me, and neither should I have to open threads in new windows or play the back button-forward button game again. Please revert to the new format, thanks.

Some other communities are using this style as well and while it is very close to the old default the big thing I've noticed is that there is no time stamp on collapsed comments. I can't tell without expanding whether something was added today or two months ago, I don't think it will be as annoying on this comm as others but it's still just another thing that we have to work around.

Honestly I think we hold out with this style or a better one if it's created and wait until the site wide update and see then if everything becomes completely borked, which lets face it, it probably will and then move.

I think something changed between me writing this and posting probably making everything redundant, we'll see. Also yay at being able to edit now.

Editing because I can: I am able to expand a thread without it opening in a new page though it has happened to me a few times in the last couple days I think it's more a glitch sometimes than standard with this custom style.

There is no expand option on a parent thread which is pointless, we need that. I could have sworn there was one earlier, possibly just going crazy.

there was in the new system, the workaround doesn't have it.

Between new LJ and this workaround, I prefer new LJ.

But between new LJ and DW, I'm all for DW.

+1, Seconded, Like, or whatever. I'm getting really sick of all the LJ antics, and I really don't use the site much anymore except that I have a Permanent account with tons of Memories, so there's no point in deleting.

Anyone who's wary of DW/having a new account/not having all the features of LJ should really check them out, at the least. They're very supportive, responsive, and always adding new (good!) stuff.

SO MUCH THIS.

This layout 'fix' looks wonky and is harder to navigate than either the old or the new layouts... *sighs*

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agreed.

Thoughts:
I greatly prefer the new layout, but I'm okay with you using the workaround for the comments and keeping FS on LJ - comments included - although the expand button is back to not working properly for me (this is a problem I have always had with the old layout).

I don't like the design/old layout but I'm cool with it.

Still preferable to DW since I won't follow there (and I don't like the look on the links).

I prefer the new layout overall.

tl;dr
DW < work around FS < new layout FS

Well, at least it looks familiar again. I certainly prefer Verdana to Arial when it comes to reading fonts. Another problem that I had with the new default layout is that it was too stretched out on the page. I like how that workaround has some margins on the sides so that it's easier to read the comments.

I don't like how we don't have timestamps on these but this is so much easier on the eyes. Thanks for trying it out.

No timestamps on collapsed thread headings D=

I still say temp move to DW while waiting for LJ to sort itself out.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the new LJ layout looks much better. The workaround looks dated in comparison. Plus, I'm really missing the expand button and new comment flags.

In order to get to your DW sample, I had to click through four "Yes, I'm an adult. No really, I promise" prompts. I'm just a casual user of this comm, so I don't base my day around coming to check on the new secrets at precisely 7:00 (or whatever). Honestly, if it does move, I doubt I'll stick around. I just don't care enough to bother going through the trouble of following it over.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I like the DW better than the workaround, but it's your choice.

I'm just worried about when more stuff changes, than what?

There's another work around for Flexible Squares that I think is better than this Georgia work around. Can give it a shot and see if it works for the comm.
