i don't get the appeal of watching somebody else play a video game (except maybe checking to see if the game would be something you like) at all. aside from that, i haven't seen this particular girl's videos, but she does sound like she fits squarely into the girl gamer stereotype :/

I'd be surprised if at least one of the major appeals weren't the jokes or other witty dialogue and commenting. Another understandable reason to watch others play would be if the viewer didn't have the necessary console to play the game, or if they couldn't get past certain parts of the game (I'd like to be able to finish some games, but some genres just completely escape my ability to complete them), or if in the case of games with a lot of choices and a lot of gameplay to get to those choices (like the Bioware games) it can be cool to see other endings.

I will agree that the appeal of watching a Let's Play that has absolutely no input from the player and is mostly about the gameplay instead of the story of the game is a lot more difficult to conceive of, but then again, it's common for people to do odd things when they're bored, so if all else fails we can just blame that, haha.

I guess... I just get the impression from the people who do let's plays that I've seen tend to try really goddamn hard to be funny or interesting and it just gets obnoxious, rarely ever actually witty. As for playing games that I can't like console exclusives, it still isn't the same as playing it yourself. I do enjoy some of the "highlight" videos because those are the bits that are actually funny, I'd just never sit around watching somebody else play a game when I could be playing it myself.

Hah, well, yes, like anything, it can be hard to find commenters who, er, mesh with one's individual humor dial, so to speak. I still haven't found anyone who I can stand to watch play through Red Dead Redemption's zombie patch, and there have been times where I'll find someone really funny play through a game that I don't even care about.

I think, though, other than watching people play through parts of Dragon Age that I didn't have the heart to go through with, the only game I've really watched someone else play that I had the option of playing myself was the recent Zelda game: Skyward Sword. Watching it being played, I'm sure that even if I could get past the annoyance of the Wiimotes, I'd have a hard time really dealing with the constant babying feeling the game seems to have...
But yeah, otherwise, I totally understand where you're coming from. Games feel more awesome when you're in control of what's happening, or if it's your doing that caused the enemies to perish or the environment to be explored, etc. There is still something to be said about watching others play, though.

I watch e-sports and enjoy it like watching any other competitive sport. I like to support it too because I would love nothing more than some gender diversity and it's completely feasible as it's not full contact. The all girl teams are cool and all, but they're filled with Mia Rose's who flaunt their assets and are mediocre gamers. Not to mention the only time you see them play are in special tournaments that are either girls vs guys or girls vs girls. Makes me sad. There's so much potential.

She streams on Twitch.tv a lot. It's an off-shoot of Justin.tv for gaming streams.

thanks, but i don't think i'd ever actually search her out, if her and her fanboys are as they seem here.

The only point I've ever seen is if you can't find a copy of a game that's part of a series with a continuing storyline, or if a game company releases games on three or four different platforms that are all part of the same series with the same storyline (I'm looking at you, Kingdom Hearts) and you can't afford to buy three different consoles just for one game franchise, you can watch the games and see what you missed.
