[Mia Rose]

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.... no. Her nick is fucking "sexy nerd girl"... Why is it so hard to have a normal fucking female vlogger or streamer talk and play games that isn't working for the company they're promoting or constantly mentioning they're a girl. Just play fucking games well and have a personality other than bubbly cute! Shit.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
~gamer gurls~ are special because they're girls and they play games!! tee hee!! I'm so totally playing CoD4!! look at me holding the controller and hitting buttons and stuff!! look I killed a d00d!! and I have boobies!! isn't that amazing?? =*^-^*=

what about female lpers? madamluna is fucking adorable.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
i don't get the appeal of watching somebody else play a video game (except maybe checking to see if the game would be something you like) at all. aside from that, i haven't seen this particular girl's videos, but she does sound like she fits squarely into the girl gamer stereotype :/

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be surprised if at least one of the major appeals weren't the jokes or other witty dialogue and commenting. Another understandable reason to watch others play would be if the viewer didn't have the necessary console to play the game, or if they couldn't get past certain parts of the game (I'd like to be able to finish some games, but some genres just completely escape my ability to complete them), or if in the case of games with a lot of choices and a lot of gameplay to get to those choices (like the Bioware games) it can be cool to see other endings.

I will agree that the appeal of watching a Let's Play that has absolutely no input from the player and is mostly about the gameplay instead of the story of the game is a lot more difficult to conceive of, but then again, it's common for people to do odd things when they're bored, so if all else fails we can just blame that, haha.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I guess... I just get the impression from the people who do let's plays that I've seen tend to try really goddamn hard to be funny or interesting and it just gets obnoxious, rarely ever actually witty. As for playing games that I can't like console exclusives, it still isn't the same as playing it yourself. I do enjoy some of the "highlight" videos because those are the bits that are actually funny, I'd just never sit around watching somebody else play a game when I could be playing it myself.

I watch e-sports and enjoy it like watching any other competitive sport. I like to support it too because I would love nothing more than some gender diversity and it's completely feasible as it's not full contact. The all girl teams are cool and all, but they're filled with Mia Rose's who flaunt their assets and are mediocre gamers. Not to mention the only time you see them play are in special tournaments that are either girls vs guys or girls vs girls. Makes me sad. There's so much potential.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
She streams on Twitch.tv a lot. It's an off-shoot of Justin.tv for gaming streams.

The only point I've ever seen is if you can't find a copy of a game that's part of a series with a continuing storyline, or if a game company releases games on three or four different platforms that are all part of the same series with the same storyline (I'm looking at you, Kingdom Hearts) and you can't afford to buy three different consoles just for one game franchise, you can watch the games and see what you missed.

[identity profile] slx.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
uh, there are a bunch of "normal regular gamers" who just happen to be female on twitch. check out the retro gaming crew.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
With that shirt/pose/the mentioned porn star perk, yeeeeah. They're pandering pretty hard.

And yeah, it's pretty vexing. The lowest common denominator will eat it all up, and that same group will likely act entitled when a normal streamer who happens to be a girl comes around. 'TITS OR GTFO', etc. If it wasn't for that obnoxious shirt I'd be very attracted to her, but I know if I was witness to any of the behavior you claim, I'd lose interest pretty fast. If she could compromise the pandering with some integrity via a form fitting sweater, some jeans, and just played the vidya I'd likely give it a shot.

I personally get annoyed with most obnoxious public sex talk, regardless of gender. And I draw cheesecake all the time, so I like to think I'm far from being a prude.

...Wow, I rambled. GUESS I GOT ~FEELINGS~ about this.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
See, I'm a gamer that happens to be a woman, and I've been wanting to try Let's Plays/vlogging about video games/something along those lines for a while now, but stuff like this is sort of discouraging because, even though I don't plan on calling much attention to my gender if it comes up (and definitely not going to bank on sex appeal because...LOL what sex appeal), I consciously know that I'm NOT all that great at playing video games, even though I've been playing games since I was six years old. I don't want people to decide I'm just an attention whore because of it, or worse, decide to use me as proof that all girl gamers suck.

It's bullshit, nobody ever uses a male gamer derping around in a game (like Tobuscus, Eru bless 'em) as proof that all guy gamers suck. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should go for it. You'll probably get a fair amount of shit (as all video game-involved female figures do), but there will definitely be people who would appreciate it and it might be fun.

[identity profile] slx.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
ch0colatemilk on youtube does some great lps on youtube, and she happens to be female. she helped me a lot through lost odyssey.

I started Let's Playing with subtitles instead of doing a voiced LP, making me gender-neutral (There was never a need to mention my gender anyway). I didn't really "come out" as a chick until the end of it. It surprised some people, but by then, they'd watched an entire well-done, funny and informative Let's Play done by a girl and enjoyed it. A difference that makes no difference is no difference.

So screw stereotypes in both directions: that only slutty, pandering, unskilled girls play games (the skilled ones are unattractive!) AND that your audience will only like you if you pander to them. There's always an easy way out (shaking boobies), but the tougher route is more rewarding, and gives you a smaller, but more intelligent fanbase that actually respects you. Quality > quantity.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way in that I've been wanting to vlog or stream games, but feel discouraged. I'm wouldn't all out blame the current female streamers because it's not entirely their fault. They do shit to get viewers, but it's the shit they do that make it difficult for any other female to come onto the scene who is very good at gaming. I know lots of women who are awesome at games, but they wouldn't think of streaming only because of their audience. Mia Rose and the other streamers when I've watched do try to play the games, but they rarely play alone (someone is always on vent with them or playing in game with them) or they're getting tons of requests to play with them and the chat is filled to the brim with flirtations and other sexist crap. Not to mention anything she does is harshly critized. I'm not just talking appearance-wise. God forbid she didn't feel like putting makeup on or doing her hair when half the guys roll out of bed and play in their boxers... But making mistakes in games get an automatic, "You suck! Girls suck at games!" Everyone makes mistakes, but the guys get jokes and laugh about it while the girls are insulted to feel like shit. It sucks.

i say go for it as well. people need to realize gamers don't just fit stereotypes. if you're posting an informative video, it shouldn't matter if you're male or female, oozing sex appeal or not. if you've been playing since you were six, i bet you have a pretty good idea of how to play and are better than you think. and honestly, if you're not, you can replay and re-record until you get the shot you're looking for. even the best gamers make mistakes while playing.

good luck!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, she looks down on the ugly girl gamers, right? I'm just getting that vibe from you.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
All I remember about this chick is that she used to cheat on Youtube by making fake accounts to subscribe to her own channel (unless I have her mixed up with someone of the same name). But I think wishing she'd DIAF is a bit much.
