See, I'm a gamer that happens to be a woman, and I've been wanting to try Let's Plays/vlogging about video games/something along those lines for a while now, but stuff like this is sort of discouraging because, even though I don't plan on calling much attention to my gender if it comes up (and definitely not going to bank on sex appeal because...LOL what sex appeal), I consciously know that I'm NOT all that great at playing video games, even though I've been playing games since I was six years old. I don't want people to decide I'm just an attention whore because of it, or worse, decide to use me as proof that all girl gamers suck.

It's bullshit, nobody ever uses a male gamer derping around in a game (like Tobuscus, Eru bless 'em) as proof that all guy gamers suck. Sigh.

I think you should go for it. You'll probably get a fair amount of shit (as all video game-involved female figures do), but there will definitely be people who would appreciate it and it might be fun.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm a bit nervous about it but at this point I've decided I really want to do it. The main reason I haven't at this point is that I haven't scraped together the cash I need for the equipment to set up recording and video editing--but I think I'll be able to do it if I work hard on getting another job.

I'm trying to do it in a way that even if I don't really get many viewers, I'm still having fun. I think that way any harsh comments I get won't matter as much as if I was trying to tailor everything to please everyone else.

ch0colatemilk on youtube does some great lps on youtube, and she happens to be female. she helped me a lot through lost odyssey.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, awesome, thanks for the recommendation! I'll check her out!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
seconding this thanks, dude. always looking for more great lpers.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I started Let's Playing with subtitles instead of doing a voiced LP, making me gender-neutral (There was never a need to mention my gender anyway). I didn't really "come out" as a chick until the end of it. It surprised some people, but by then, they'd watched an entire well-done, funny and informative Let's Play done by a girl and enjoyed it. A difference that makes no difference is no difference.

So screw stereotypes in both directions: that only slutty, pandering, unskilled girls play games (the skilled ones are unattractive!) AND that your audience will only like you if you pander to them. There's always an easy way out (shaking boobies), but the tougher route is more rewarding, and gives you a smaller, but more intelligent fanbase that actually respects you. Quality > quantity.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome to hear--and a great way to work around that problem, too. It's good to hear a personal anecdote on how it worked out. I'll try to remember to focus on offering good quality videos.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way in that I've been wanting to vlog or stream games, but feel discouraged. I'm wouldn't all out blame the current female streamers because it's not entirely their fault. They do shit to get viewers, but it's the shit they do that make it difficult for any other female to come onto the scene who is very good at gaming. I know lots of women who are awesome at games, but they wouldn't think of streaming only because of their audience. Mia Rose and the other streamers when I've watched do try to play the games, but they rarely play alone (someone is always on vent with them or playing in game with them) or they're getting tons of requests to play with them and the chat is filled to the brim with flirtations and other sexist crap. Not to mention anything she does is harshly critized. I'm not just talking appearance-wise. God forbid she didn't feel like putting makeup on or doing her hair when half the guys roll out of bed and play in their boxers... But making mistakes in games get an automatic, "You suck! Girls suck at games!" Everyone makes mistakes, but the guys get jokes and laugh about it while the girls are insulted to feel like shit. It sucks.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think a lot of gamers probably get shit when they suck regardless of gender. It's part of gaming culture, I think (which maybe extends from being part of male culture?). Still, it's kind of dumb, IMO.

I do hope things improve for girls who game in the future, though. It's changing, but we're not there yet...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, definitely. I've seen the guys get shit on too and I can't imagine it feels great either. I think it's the added generalization that tends to happens when a female player has a bad game it somehow gets turned into all women suck at games. For guys, from what I've noticed, it's mostly "so-and-so is way better than you!" which is still rude, but I don't find nearly as annoying and if it was said to me would be easier to shrug off.

I hope so too. Those booth babes at cons really need to go... or at the very least they could add some booth dudes XD

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, booth babes annoy me...although admittedly if they had male cosplayers of characters from games pop up as eye candy sometimes I wouldn't mind, so I'd be OK with them giving us some equal opportunity booth beefcakes or something.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
i say go for it as well. people need to realize gamers don't just fit stereotypes. if you're posting an informative video, it shouldn't matter if you're male or female, oozing sex appeal or not. if you've been playing since you were six, i bet you have a pretty good idea of how to play and are better than you think. and honestly, if you're not, you can replay and re-record until you get the shot you're looking for. even the best gamers make mistakes while playing.

good luck!
