Guess I agree. I'm not one of those people who easily relate to "audience surrogates," as you put it, and I'd be more interested in a new companion who doesn't idealize the Doctor and go through the whole new player tutorial shebang (for fuck's sake psychic paper gets explained way too many times imo).

Yup, this. I don't need characters I can ''relate'' to, whatever that means. I just want interesting characters.

Unless I got it wrong, I always assumed it meant being able to empathize, or picture them as a stand-in for me. Like Bella Swan? That just weirds me out tbh, trying to see myself as such-and-such character. Even if I can't relate to a character though, I can still love them since relatability doesn't even factor into that.

Exactly. And also, a character doesn't have to be human or from contemporary times for me to be able to ''relate'' to them. And the characters I can relate aren't necessarily my favourites, either. Also, I think most viewers can relate to a character in some circumstances, while not necessarily relating to them all the time.

same. also, you can relate to things other than 'working in a shop' like being kept apart from someone you love or having too much pressure put on you to be something else or lots of other things that could take place on any world at any time.

By the 'we need and every man/woman' logic Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly and tonnes of others are totally unwatchable.
