lol whatever, I like having a companion from approximately the present. I also like them bringing a human element into the show.

But honestly I don't care too much as long as the primary companion is always a woman.

Funny, I actually would love for them to take a break from female companions for a while. Maybe not a full season but for a few episodes. I wish Jack had been on long with either Nine or Ten and gotten some one-on-one time with the Doctor, while Rose or Martha visited family or something like that. I wish Amy had disappeared for a while, leaving Rory with Eleven. And most of my friends who are into Doctor Who agree with me.

ITA. If they feel they absolutely must have a present-day audience surrogate girl at all times, I don't see why we can't get a regular second companion with a more varied background.

I've liked Rose, Martha, Donna and Amy as individual characters, but it's sad the writers think we can only relate to characters like them.

Guess I agree. I'm not one of those people who easily relate to "audience surrogates," as you put it, and I'd be more interested in a new companion who doesn't idealize the Doctor and go through the whole new player tutorial shebang (for fuck's sake psychic paper gets explained way too many times imo).

Yes, THIS so much this! I am SICK to death cookie-cutter New Who main female companions: Pretty, young woman from the UK in her late 20's with a 'feisty' personality. The only who wasn't this was Donna.

Give me Turlough or Hell Leela any day. Heck I'll TAKE Mel, at least she wasn't a cookie-cutter.

I agree so hard, and felt this way pretty much after Martha. The last companion we had from the PAST was freakin' VICTORIA. From the SECOND DOCTOR ERA. I mean, what. It's way way over due, and it could totally awesome and fun. They could get a companion from the 1960s and make it extra hilarious. Sigh. I guess at least we got Jack from ~the future~ but I really just want alien or super past (ancient Roman era would be awesome the way someone up thread mention, even though we did sort of have an ancient Greek companion with Katarina, but she hardly counts since she was in exactly one mostly-burniated First Doctor serial). I mean, if they want the whole "everyday Earth girl" thing, then that's fine, but do like a Tegan-Nyssa-Adric thing again, with aliens or people from different time periods in addition to her.

Firstly: Adric. <3 All time favourite companion. Though I also have Romana II, Ace, Sarah Jane, River, Leela, K9 and Donna among my favourites.

You have to understand that the companion is there, predominantly, to almost play the 'everyman' trope. They're supposed to be there for the audience to put themselves in the shoes of which is why they're a little feistier than usual and of a generally average age. So a modern (for the broadcast era) character is generally going to be the most likely candidate for a companion. It's somebody the general audience (as well as the hardcore fan contingent) can supposedly sympathise with.

I'm not saying this is GOOD time after goddamn time, but it's a common technique in a great deal of stuff, especially things where the lead character is a non-human or generally weird individual.

You know, if they do the 50th year special, I'd love to see Matt Smith work with Frazer Hines and have Jamie meet Eleven. Aside from Jamie ftw- Matt emulates Patrick Troughton the most in his portrayal, and I think there's a hilarity that could be in there of Jamie going "Doctor! You look so young!" And Eleven can be all "and you're looking older than I remember"
and he and Amy can Scottish out and just...
