lol whatever, I like having a companion from approximately the present. I also like them bringing a human element into the show.

But honestly I don't care too much as long as the primary companion is always a woman.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Future lady, past lady, alien lady, I don't care as long as she's a lady. A guy can come too, but there needs to be a woman on board.

I agree. I really liked some of the dynamics that Jack and Rory provided (and honestly I NEEDED Rory because the Eleven-Amy dynamic was flat as hell for me) but I really like Rose, Martha, and Donna more than Jack & Rory.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I mean -- well honestly in the first four seasons I got so into the Doctor/main-companion relationship that I got irritated by any and all intruders, but that hasn't been the case at all with Eleven -- with him it basically seems to be the more the merrier. So SURE, bring in a woman from the past and a future alien dude and Kamelion 2.0 or whatever, that's cool. I just need there to be a lead female presence on the show, not just "two guys! and sometimes their girlfriends".

Okay how about the Rani? I think she'd ROCK as hostasge/companion.

[identity profile] crazedingly.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
B-b-but JAMIE!

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I relate more to the Doctor then I ever to his companions. He's an eccentric outsider and so I am. Also I seem to know more about history then most people. Anyways IHMO Turlough was the best Companion EVER.

I like characters most of the time because they are interesting... not to relate to them the only character I only really related to other then Doctor was...

Image (http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f395/zigstersnyc/?action=view&current=gollum.jpg)

The Doctor is MUCH more positive.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't look for characters who duplicate me or remind me of myself either, it's just not really how I interact with fiction, and I want to be able to sympathize with or understand a character's actions more than I want them to necessarily act the way I would in any given situation. It's not that I don't think I could sympathize with/like a male companion -- if I couldn't relate to male characters my media-watching experience would be pretty limited -- so much as it is just that the representation of women in things I watch is important to me. And particularly on a show like Doctor Who which does tend to have very prominent female roles, it would be a shame to me to lose that in favour of having another bromance on TV. I like bromances, but there's no shortage of them.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
But it's NEVER been a bromance... EVER.
But so many women have roles that are so limited even in scfi. and their dreams and ambitions are all related to marrying someone and having a baby and they ALL look like barbies

I swear a straight man could turn on nearly ANY show with a female character mute and wank to it, because they all so pretty.
IT's NOT positive to me. I'd rather have all male cast where half of them look like shit then an all scantily-clad female cast of BABES where even the 'plain' one would be a ten in real life.

I mean this a female corner of the internet but I've been out on places where it's all men. And guys? Well their standards are getting just as unrealistic and bad.

Women will date an ugly man because he's witty, intelligent, compassionate and a brilliant scientist. She's love him, she fuck him and have his babies.

A man? She better not be fat or flat, or have a 'butter face' WTF!

"she'd be LUCKY to be raped!" HARHARARHAR!

Sexism so rampant and it infects out society to the core.

We have to get the idea that every woman SHOULD not LOOK like barbie. I like Lady Gaga... because she has a long nose and dresses weird.

honestly I don't care too much as long as the primary companion is always a woman.

....Why?

What's wrong with having a primary male companion? If that's too much testosterone for you or whatever (not that the Doctor is hardly a typical 'pure blooded male') why not a primary male companion with a girlfriend similar to Rory or Mickey?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I just want there to be an important lead female on the show. Sci-fi doesn't need another show about two dudes being dudes and occasionally there's a pretty lady for an episode or two. A secondary character (like Mickey) who only appears in a supporting role sometimes doesn't appeal to me. Similarly, I like Rory, but he's very much still secondary to Amy. I don't mind the idea of a male companion in addition to an important female companion, but I don't want only a guy.

If the Doctor was ever a woman, that'd be different, but I suspect chances of that are much lower than the chances of a male companion.
got_swagger: (Default)

[personal profile] got_swagger 2011-12-24 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that if it was a primary male companion with a girlfriend, it's almost a guarantee that the girlfriend won't have agency of her own and her entire life will be about the boyfriend. No thank you.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
lol yeah let's all take a second to imagine how much fandom would just love female-Rory or female-Mickey. Lawd.

But it would hardly be for the entire show like say Supernatural where the whole theme is literally "bros before hoes" (ick). It would just be for a season. Personally I think it would be an interesting change of perspective, not to mention nice for young male fans like my little nephew to have a male companion they could relate to (he hates it whenever him and his sister play Doctor Who, he always has to be the Doctor XD).

Hardly the first time it's been done either. Steven and Jamie got to the Doctor's primary companion for at least a short time each. And you've got Wilf in End of Time. WILF! <3

[personal profile] got_swagger 2011-12-24 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Except there's the problematic undertone of that, which is that it's okay for little girls to admire and emulate and relate to male characters and female characters, but little boys shouldn't admire, emulate or relate to female characters at all, only males. It's an unfortunate double-standard.

A season in the Doctor Who universe is a long time, though! I mean... it'd be nice for young male fans, sure, and I'm not saying there can't be other male companions as well (like Rory! Or, you know, even better, a version of Rory who isn't criminally underused and underwritten!), but by the same logic what about little girls watching? I just think this show has enough issues when it comes to female characters without adding "there aren't any" to the list.

A full season is quite different to one or two specials, though.

Funny, funny... You know in most of Doctor Who's history it has been a Doctor and his female companion. Most of males who have been around the Doctor apart from Jamie have gotten NOTHING but contempt. The girls get more respect.

THESE ARE TRUE FACTS.

Funny, I actually would love for them to take a break from female companions for a while. Maybe not a full season but for a few episodes. I wish Jack had been on long with either Nine or Ten and gotten some one-on-one time with the Doctor, while Rose or Martha visited family or something like that. I wish Amy had disappeared for a while, leaving Rory with Eleven. And most of my friends who are into Doctor Who agree with me.

Different strokes for different folks.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-25 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just not interested in seeing the show become two guys adventurin' through space with the women taking a back seat. One of the things I think Doctor Who has going for it, whatever you want to argue about the treatment of its female characters, is that they ARE given about-equal importance to the Doctor in their seasons. I don't want to see that change. I wouldn't mind seeing scenes or maybe an episode where the emphasis is on the Doctor and a male companion, but I don't want a season. I think we've had that in s5 and s6, with Craig. That's enough for me.

I know every time new companions come up, people clamour for a male companion, but I'm just not interested. Too many dicks on the dancefloor and all that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but tbh I find YOUR comments kind of sexist. :| What does it matter if they're men or women, as long as they're well-written and interesting characters? That should be the most important thing, not gender ffs.
