But it would hardly be for the entire show like say Supernatural where the whole theme is literally "bros before hoes" (ick). It would just be for a season. Personally I think it would be an interesting change of perspective, not to mention nice for young male fans like my little nephew to have a male companion they could relate to (he hates it whenever him and his sister play Doctor Who, he always has to be the Doctor XD).

Hardly the first time it's been done either. Steven and Jamie got to the Doctor's primary companion for at least a short time each. And you've got Wilf in End of Time. WILF! <3

Except there's the problematic undertone of that, which is that it's okay for little girls to admire and emulate and relate to male characters and female characters, but little boys shouldn't admire, emulate or relate to female characters at all, only males. It's an unfortunate double-standard.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that too. Reminds me of that quote about how little girls will want to be Amy Pond and little boys will want them to be Amy Pond. I misread it originally as "little boys will want [to be Amy too]" and I was like AWWWW... but nope.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's just how kids are though. Sure it doesn't apply to all kids and at the nursery I work at I've seen as many young boys playing with dolls as I have girls playing with trucks and cars etc. But a lot of kids are in the mindset where they relate to things better when they're like them, gender and all. It's not ideal but they're kids. They're innocent.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I know when I was a little kid my favourite character tended to be the female character in most things, just because "GIRL POWER" and whatever (and frankly in retrospect that usually left me a choice between one or maybe two characters as compared to the half-dozen male characters). But beyond that I think even once you hit adulthood there's this assumption that while a woman is expected to relate to both men and women, a man can only be expected to relate to another man.

It brings to mind the whole fuckery over Disney's Tangled. The name got changed because OMG NO BOYS WILL EVER WANT TO WATCH RAPUNZEL! QUICK! PIMP THE HELL OUT OF THE MANLY MALE LEAD!

Or we could just let children know that it's okay to like both male and female characters regardless of sex/gender.

I love your theory but growing up, I never found anything to relate to in so MANY female characters in fiction. None of them are remotely like me or something I'd like to be. And LOTS of little boys admired Sarah Jane and had their first crush on her.

I cannot THIS this comment enough

A season in the Doctor Who universe is a long time, though! I mean... it'd be nice for young male fans, sure, and I'm not saying there can't be other male companions as well (like Rory! Or, you know, even better, a version of Rory who isn't criminally underused and underwritten!), but by the same logic what about little girls watching? I just think this show has enough issues when it comes to female characters without adding "there aren't any" to the list.

A full season is quite different to one or two specials, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:46 am (UTC)(link)

HAHAHA. Sorry, I had to laugh at that. It's just coz over here our seasons are like 20 episodes at the least. Doctor Who has about...13? Unless you mean how they were spaced out this year because, yeah, that did feel like a long time.

Well the little girls already have four badass female companions to aspire to (yes, they are all badass IMO). For guys it is just the Doctor and occasionally an underwritten male side character. What's wrong with just having one badass male companion who simply wants to travel with the Doctor and not just be there for the sake of his girlfriend? Also, c'mon, while Moffat is still around it means we'll always have River Song popping up in every other episode. So there'll hardly be no female characters left when she's become so important to the canon at this point.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I mean within the context of the show/for the show. Seasons are short but spread far apart

Why can't there be a badass guy who is not a boyfriend and a badass woman with x/y/z plot? I have nothing against that. Jack was like that (except that he never had a full season). That's all I'm saying. Make a great male companion! But he doesn't need to be the only one.

River Song is... not really going to cut it for me in terms of good female representation, unfortunately.

THIS.

And though I sincerely wish it otherwise... also this.

TBH I was hoping s6 would be like that and Rory would get his own arc outside of Amy and Amy would develop more and everything would be beautiful and nothing would hurt!

Alas.

[personal profile] got_swagger 2011-12-24 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

I love Rory and I LOVE Rory's fierce love and devotion to his wife, but I was hoping for even just a teensy little arc for him. And a great arc for Amy.

But, as you said... Alas.

I'm conflicted on the subject, personally. There are times that I'd like to see the dynamic of the Doctor interacting with a primary male companion, just because it would be a new thing to explore, something that we haven't seen before, and it would say to young boys that they could be companions too, which is a message that I'm not seeing much on modern Who, where, except for Jack, the male companions have been tagalongs to the female companions. At the same time, though, I acknowledge that the show already does have problems with female characters, so by dropping them from the main cast entirely would easily create more, not to mention that, though growing, the list of female characters on sci-fi shows who aren't created and used primarily out of a desire for sex appeal is still on the low side, and seeing more rounded female characters is always a good thing, so... I don't know.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I mean to be honest I'm satisfied by the glimpses you get with Craig or Jack or Mickey or Rory, Craig and Jack I guess being better examples of male companions who interact with the Doctor for reasons beyond a mutual friend/girlfriend. I guess it just never felt to me like there was a lack of deep male friendships on TV, particularly in sci-fi, whereas there IS a lack of strong female characters.

But I wouldn't mind having a male companion unrelated to the female companion tag along for a whole season, sort of like Nine, Rose and Jack in s1. I just wouldn't want it to become only Nine and Jack.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
True. To be honest, I have no serious complaints about the current set up (The Doctor and a female companion) that would ever make me stop watching. I just like playing around with different ideas, the what if's. We haven't seen the Doctor with a primary male companion, at least not in modern Who, which is what I'm really familiar with, so that's at least something of the appeal of the idea for me. I know that just because it's something we haven't seen doesn't automatically make it something that we need to see, I'm just saying that I wouldn't mind seeing it if it were to happen.

And, given the precedent, it's probably not likely to happen, since the Doctor's companions usually are female. But it's an interesting scenario to play out, at least for me.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
What about a compromise, with a male and female companion who are not romantically involved and who are treated equally by the show, maybe even siblings?

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
This would be awesome. I don't see why there can't be two "primary" companions.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm sick of that. I've noticed NOTHING but T&A. And heard the way Fanboys talk:
"Oh I'd abduct her and do nasty things." And THEN the disgustig, degrading fanart.

I thought Deanna Troi was T&A, when I watched the ST:TNG Hated her worse then Wesley, actually I didn't mind Wesley. Then ST:VOY I watched it from the start and.... Seven of Nine ewwww I hated her, to me it was series lowest moment bringing her on.

And The things they have Tegan and Peri running around in. But DAMN Amy is no BETTER.

However MOST of the Doctors haven't been Lookers. I'd have to say Three are classically good looking.

What are telling little girls? You can awesome adventures but but you have to STACKED? Depressing.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'd already bailed on Voyager by the time Seven of Nine was introduced in the original run, but based on reruns I've seen, she was a legitimately good character played by a capable actress. BUT OH THAT OUTFIT.

It's not that Women Must Pretend They Don't Have Boobs, but there was no in-story reason for her not to just start wearing a uniform like the rest. It's not like that catsuit was standard issue Borg apparel, either. Same thing with T'Pol on Enterprise. Ever other Vulcan we saw wore robes, but not her. I wonder why?

I'm not sure I agree with you on the Doctors. I started watching with NuWho, and fell madly in love with Nine. I'd say Five and Ten are very attractive, though not my type, Eight was very much presented as a romantic figure, Eleven has the whole boyish nerdy charm going on, and Four, to me, was strangely sexy. Though yeah, looks aren't nearly so much the end all and be all.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Elven has the weirdest face since Tom Baker, NO EYEBROW and that CHIN!

Look I lust after Doctors Three- Eight and Eleven. With Six being my favorite and I consider him very sexy.

Hell I think '70's porn-Colin Baker is sexy' So I may be touched in the head.

I was just saying what 'normal' non-fans might think.

It's funny about Seven, watching VOY I was pretty young and not really thinking about anyone sexually. I LOVED Seven. I loved the idea of a Borg becoming human I loved her exploring humanity like Data did but not being in love with it all, voicing her doubts and acting on them, I loved her relationship with the Doctor and with Janeway. I was pretty much watching just for her as a character by the end.

Yeah she wore a catsuit but I never cared or even thought about it. She was just cool, and sometimes funny and awesome and smart.

I think it's silly to dismiss a character because off how they are dressed.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I was older then you when I started watching like around nine when I got into ST:NG reruns and a bit older when VOY came out. And to me it was SCREAMINGLY obviously they already had one: "I'm exploring humanity" character in the doctor. Why did they need another and why get rid of Kes?
