Firstly: Adric. <3 All time favourite companion. Though I also have Romana II, Ace, Sarah Jane, River, Leela, K9 and Donna among my favourites.

You have to understand that the companion is there, predominantly, to almost play the 'everyman' trope. They're supposed to be there for the audience to put themselves in the shoes of which is why they're a little feistier than usual and of a generally average age. So a modern (for the broadcast era) character is generally going to be the most likely candidate for a companion. It's somebody the general audience (as well as the hardcore fan contingent) can supposedly sympathise with.

I'm not saying this is GOOD time after goddamn time, but it's a common technique in a great deal of stuff, especially things where the lead character is a non-human or generally weird individual.
