I'm going to make myself sound really really dumb, I know, but how exactly does CAPTCHA help digitize books again? ...I just don't get it >_>

As I understand it, when a scanned manuscript contains text that's smeared, damaged, or in an obsolete font, computer programs designed to convert them to text docs can't read it. So they take words and turn them into CAPTCHAs, thereby getting actual humans to read the marred words for them. (I think that's why CAPTCHAs have two words; one they already know, to make sure you're a human and not a bot, and the second one for you to read for them.)
