I think this secret is kind of sweet, in a sad way.... if a bit rambly.

ia, except for the rambly part. it was written really well imo

Same here. OP didn't drift around, they had a point, and this is one of those secrets I'm keeping saved because it's just so wonderful to read.

Congratuations on climbing up out of all the many adversities and finding happiness, love, a career, and security. You are a strong person, and if free stories helped keep you that way, yay for free stories!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for you.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's nice you're doing well now, but fuck captcha. It's free labor and if publishers and the like want their book digitized, they should hire people or get interns to do it for free. I also love when people get words in Hebrew or Arabic and they don't have the ability to write them.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
or just random jumbles of letters and numbers- I've gotten things that look like someone dumped their alphabet soup on the screen.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a librarian, and as long as websites are having to do something to keep the bots at bay by having us demonstrate that we're human beings, it might as well be something useful. OCRs are notoriously inaccurate, and every little bit helps.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. I also personally like being able to help.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't like it when I get an alphabet I don't have on my keyboard but really, so what? It takes five seconds to try again and get a new text.

[identity profile] xpaperplanex.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I say we might as well put our ability to read words to good use. I'd rather help digitize a book than have to type in entirely random letters and numbers. If you get something you can't read/type, there's a refresh button.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Why don't they get volunteers though? Especially when there are people out there actively trying to sabotage captcha? I have no idea what OCR stands for.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
:(

But Project Gutenberg only archives books with no copyright restrictions -- which usually means works that were published at least 100 years ago whose copyright has expired. Yeah, it's free labor, but it's to produce a free product. All the original publishers are long since dead. Even if they had somehow seen into the future to foresee the demand for electronic texts, I'm pretty sure they don't have a whole lot of interns at their disposal at this point that they can set to work digitizing a text that the publisher no longer owns.

Re: OP

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Then why not ask people to volunteer then? I'm sure there are a lot of people who wouldn't mind typing books up for the hell of it.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Now I want to hunt through Project Gutenberg for really old pastiches... Any chance you can provide some links, OP?

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
You and me both

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ok now I'm sad because it looks like most of my bookmarks don't work anymore, but I found Bret Harte's "The Stolen Cigar Case", which is pretty funny. (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2278)

There are two by some big name authors hosted elsewhere on another site, one by J. M. Barrie (http://thenostalgialeague.com/olmag/barrie.html) which is adorable, and one by P. G. Wodehouse (http://thenostalgialeague.com/olmag/dudley-jones.html) which is ridiculous.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe the Wayback Machine can help with the links that have failed.

Thanks, OP!

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think most people know that about ReCaptcha, OP. I didn't learn it until just a few months ago, for instance, and once I did it became much less annoying to me.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
That is bittersweet, good that fanfic got you through that. But I have to wonder what kind of sorry ass excuse for a city doesn't have a public library? My city is bankrupt and has a rockin' one. If I were you I'd start a petition.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Gloucester City, New Jersey, for one. At the time the neighboring city of Camden had a public library system that you had to be a city resident to use, but they closed most of the branches and I think have since been absorbed by the county library system. The county system is great if you live in a town with a branch, it's just unfortunately there's not a branch that's always easily accessible to everyone. And there's a couple of towns in the county that have their own libraries for township residents, but offer discounted cards for county residents.

I'm going to make myself sound really really dumb, I know, but how exactly does CAPTCHA help digitize books again? ...I just don't get it >_>

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
As I understand it, when a scanned manuscript contains text that's smeared, damaged, or in an obsolete font, computer programs designed to convert them to text docs can't read it. So they take words and turn them into CAPTCHAs, thereby getting actual humans to read the marred words for them. (I think that's why CAPTCHAs have two words; one they already know, to make sure you're a human and not a bot, and the second one for you to read for them.)

I'm really sorry about what happened to your friend, but glad that you were able to keep going and that thinks imporved so drastically eventually. Especially with your family. Congratulations.

I can see how you would be noszalgic for the past anyway, though: the little bit of happiness you had back then must have been even more meaningful given that everything else was so difficult for you.
