I feel this way about a lot of things. I can understand characters better than I can understand worlds or plots.

I can sympathize. I love reading about worlds or gaming in them but I'm not always capable of writing about them or remember the tiny details. I don't write AUs that well but I'll often write fics that focus narrowly on the characters. Especially in fandoms where "researching the world" involves reading message boards filled with asstons of fevered debate about really minor points.

It's one of my deficiencies as a writer for sure, but there is is.

Code Geass is a particularly excellent example of where this would actually be at least partially sensical, since it's got plenty of high school drama already.

Yeah, it pretty much goes back and forth between being a high school anime, a mech, a dystopia,a Game of Thrones in the FUTURE, and a few other genres. Several of the filler episodes of the show were just about them in high school anyway. A high school AU would also give them all a happy ending...

In un-secret related news, I LOVE that fan art you used for the secret. It's adorable, who's is it, OP? Now I kinda want a Code Geass AU where they are all in a liberal arts college and Lelouch is a pretentious, stereotypical hipster...

I'm pretty sure the picture in the secret is official art.

I like non-magical AUs for similiar reasons, mine being that I like seeing how the characters would behave if they existed in a completely different environment. Taking this to its logical conclusion, I also like magical AUs of non-magical canon. Sometimes, if I really get into a non-magical AU, I want to see a magical AU for the non-magical AU. The whole thing just goes 'round in circles. (Usually my brain just tells me "A magical AU for the non-magical AU? ...You mean the show?")

But it's interesting to read things that take magical/supernatural elements of the show and come up with non-magical parallels.

I love AU's in the Buffy verse where Spike and Buffy are normal teenagers who meets and falls in love and so on, always felt a tad alone in loving AU's.

I really love sci-fi settings and strong world building, but I also get interest in realistic AUs for sci-fi or fantasy characters. I don't think it's missing the point. It's just being interested in how the characters would exist in a different setting.

are you me? :'(

[identity profile] icarian-ink.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, don't worry...I like to write high school AUs for my OCs. Considerably lamer.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I needed wordcount, so I wrote a high school AU for my NaNoWriMo characters, so I know how you feel, lol. |D

HEE. Just write them, then! I love AUs and I know there's no way I am the only one :D
