All the ones after Book 3 bored me. I just didn't care enough about the characters to keep going when the plot got complicated, and the later ones weren't fun to read if you really didn't care about the plot.

I haven't seen so much of that, but I will say the fact that Sherlock is actually PERFECTLY HAPPY the way he is (and not in a the-lady-doth-prpotest-too-much kind of way) and has no interest in changing seems to have passed an alarming number of "fans" by.

In the bulk of fanfic I've read for the series it's like House has ditched his cane, died his hair and put on an English accent.

I think this pretty fair; this is what I did back in my anime/manga fandom days. Some of the shows just got to the point where they kept going on and on and were never going to end, that I just tended to prefer things that had its set beginning and end.

Although it gets kind of bittersweet, because I'd fall in love with an anime/manga (my icon, basically) and want more than what was given.

I did this for years. then someone told me it would get easier if I just started joining in discussions about things that I'm interested in, so I did.

now I'm an F!S regular, and I still have no fandom friends. the moral of this story: I have no idea.

This doesn't need to be a secret Anon! There are plenty of people in fandom that love Quark. Sure he can be somewhat sexiest at times but he has such great character development over the course of the show I think it's hard for anyone to at least not grow to respect him in someway.

Personally I love Garak, who used to kill people for a living, so I'm not going to judge you in the least ;)

I think the movie was SO AWFUL, but I also enjoy watching it because it's just fun to watch. I don't think it's a bad thing to like it! I'm an enormous FF7 fan and as much as I despise how it was done, I get the giddies seeing the characters portrayed in such amazing graphics.

That and Reno and Rude were so well done it almost makes up for the rest. ALMOST. I watch their shenanigans repeatedly.

Even so, my hopes are they don't butcher the remake of the game as badly.

But yeah...I can definitely see where the appeal comes from. I like the idea of someone being dependent on you to the point where your existence is the most important thing in their life, or you merely being there for them is enough to make them happy. Only if it's a healthy relationship, of course. Which isn't always how it goes in fiction.
