Actually, I think the fact that you can take something you enjoy and acknowledge and analyze it's problematic elements makes you mature and reasonable, not hypocritical.

I was just coming to say this. I love plenty of things while still acknowledging the flaws. Nothing hypocritical about that.

This. Smokey and the Bandit is a terribly sexist film that advocates reckless(Well, let's be honest, damn near suicidal) driving and complete disregard for authority of any sort. Adult me knows this. Do I still love the hell out of it and watch it all the time because it was part of my childhood and is just plain fun? Damn straight.

Edited for grammar fails and to clarify wording.

Was just coming here to say this.

Do films like The Little Mermaid have rather problematic things that should be discussed and acknowledged? Oh fuck yes, they do. Does that mean that I don't still enjoy the film? Fuck no, it doesn't.

You can appreciate a film despite its flaws.

Actually, this.

If you can look at this stuff, like it, and STILL analyze it with the theories appropriately, you are doing social science very VERY well. There will be points when you need to learn to separate yourself from what you're analyzing, and it sounds like you're able to do that.

This! There is a lot of stuff I love, but I always engage in critically thinking about aspects I find problematic. I mean, no person is perfect, and we should not take any person's work as perfect or perfectly truthful and swallow it down whole.

Best to pick out the nasty bits so you don't end up accidentally poisoning your mind, yo.
