Actually, I think the fact that you can take something you enjoy and acknowledge and analyze it's problematic elements makes you mature and reasonable, not hypocritical.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I was just coming to say this. I love plenty of things while still acknowledging the flaws. Nothing hypocritical about that.

This!

Was just coming here to say this.

Do films like The Little Mermaid have rather problematic things that should be discussed and acknowledged? Oh fuck yes, they do. Does that mean that I don't still enjoy the film? Fuck no, it doesn't.

You can appreciate a film despite its flaws.

eeeexactly!

Actually, this.

If you can look at this stuff, like it, and STILL analyze it with the theories appropriately, you are doing social science very VERY well. There will be points when you need to learn to separate yourself from what you're analyzing, and it sounds like you're able to do that.

I think it just means that you're thinking critically about things you love, which IMO is a good thing. It's good to think about things like that critically. :)

Sexism exists in media. That doesn't mean you have to dislike female characters.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're not a hypocrite. It's okay, perhaps sometimes even important, to criticize the things you love.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all. Hell, I write most of my essays based on what peer reviewed references I can find. So most of the time they don't even match my opinions. lol

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have a kind of love-hate relationship with these films as well. As a teenager I loathed them and always ranted about how they're bad examples for young girls. And I think they still are in many ways. But now that I'm in my mid.... oh, ok, late 20s... I can enjoy them just as often beautiful pieces of animation, and pretend the horrible messages aren't there. That's what you call a guilty pleasure.

I still don't know if I'd let my daughter watch them, though, if I had a daughter. Maybe I'd use them as jumping off points for conversations with her about the less pleasant bits of the stories. But more likely I'll just give her the Miyazaki classics the watch instead and let her watch Disney when she's a little older.

That's kind of tl;dr considering I don't even have any kids..

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Basically what the others said. But I wanna add that if you're persuading others not to watch the movies, then it may be hypocritical. Just sayin. Otherwise...CINDERELLA, POCAHONTAS, TIANA, OMG. I love seeing them in the same picture.

[identity profile] bogboblin.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say it's hypocritical at all!!!

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Disney movies aren't devoid of sexist messages, so it's not as if you're making up controversy from thin air. Plus, it's hard to find media that doesn't have sexism in it, so there's nothing wrong with enjoying something despite that.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's not hypocritical OP. You're just being rational and accepting that something you like isn't perfect.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you need to view something as perfect or perfectly agreeable to enjoy it.

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said in the Harley thread above - there's a difference between criticizing the characters and criticizing the creators. It's certainly fine to like the characters tbut to have issues with how their story is set up and told.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, I like Glee but damn that show has it' isms!

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
No, it just means your trying to look at something without bias.

Honestly, I don't think Disney movies are half as bad as what people call them out for. I think the only real problems are that they tend to emphasis that the girls are pretty and that they always always end up with a guy in the end.

I much rather see someone take some other children movies and analyze them. Disney's always done. What about Pixar or Dreamworks or Universal or Warner Bros.? But I guess they don't have as many female leads, which is probably a bigger problem.

I wish I could be you, anon. When I was in my early teens, I hated Disney movies for those reasons. In my mid-teens, I decided they weren't so bad and liked them unashamedly. Now I still like them, but I'm depressed cause I'm going to Social Justice Hell.

They're likable, it's just that the movies' messages aren't always perfect. But there's a lot to like about all of 'em. As long as you have perspective, right?

[identity profile] emmakitty.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I wrote my MA thesis on sexism and corporate greed within Disney Princesses and I still love them to bits. I love the movies, I have a lot of the merchandise, and I just can't help but like them! I don't think their flaws should (or necessarily can) prevent them from bringing me joy, which I basically said in my research. Disney Princess FTW!

[identity profile] falconwhitaker.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
As everybody else has said, you're not a hypocrite for recognising that something that you like very much has flaws as well. It's a good thing to be able to understand that things you like aren't perfect, but it's also a good thing to like something despite its flaws :)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-28 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah well most people who specialize in gender studies are raging hypocrites, so you're in good company.
