Do films like The Little Mermaid have rather problematic things that should be discussed and acknowledged? Oh fuck yes, they do. Does that mean that I don't still enjoy the film? Fuck no, it doesn't.
You can appreciate a film despite its flaws.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 08:25 am (UTC)(link)If you can look at this stuff, like it, and STILL analyze it with the theories appropriately, you are doing social science very VERY well. There will be points when you need to learn to separate yourself from what you're analyzing, and it sounds like you're able to do that.

I still don't know if I'd let my daughter watch them, though, if I had a daughter. Maybe I'd use them as jumping off points for conversations with her about the less pleasant bits of the stories. But more likely I'll just give her the Miyazaki classics the watch instead and let her watch Disney when she's a little older.
That's kind of tl;dr considering I don't even have any kids..

Honestly, I don't think Disney movies are half as bad as what people call them out for. I think the only real problems are that they tend to emphasis that the girls are pretty and that they always always end up with a guy in the end.
I much rather see someone take some other children movies and analyze them. Disney's always done. What about Pixar or Dreamworks or Universal or Warner Bros.? But I guess they don't have as many female leads, which is probably a bigger problem.
