It's okay, we all have our kinks OP.

As long as they're reasonably well-written characters* IDGAF if the uke is the tiniest bug-eyed femme while the manry seme is like thrice his size. :V

*Yeah yeah "lol well-written characters in yaoi lol." It happens sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
*shifty eyes* ... do you have any recs for yaoi with these well-written characters?

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Everyone finds different things hot.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. Tropes are not bad, after all, if they're pulled off well.

[identity profile] cowgirlmaxwell.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not a huge fan of it myself, but I just want to say that I think that's totally cool (in case the "You Can Only Ever Fap To Well-Written, Realistic Porn Brigade" come along) :)

I think some people are attracted to intense polarities and others are not. I've never quite understood why those who aren't spend so much time dissing those who are.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for everyone, but the reason I did it rather vehemently when I was younger was that the amount of intensely polarized relationships in BL/slash was overwhelming. I was so sick of it that I would rage about it given the opportunity. Of course, that's not the solution. Writing what one likes instead is the solution, and I have since and other people who share my tastes have as well, and now there's a lot more variety out there. There isn't much need to complain anymore.

I know my usual RP partner/beta often did because he's a queer man himself and it felt, to him, like we were telling him how he was "supposed" to behave in a relationship, when IRL he doesn't have those inclinations at all nor did it reflect his lived reality in any meaningful sense. Like we were telling him that as a gay man he had to pick to be either "the man" or "the woman" in his relationships. Which is grating and ridiculous and I completely understand how it would rankle him; it rankled me, too. Of course, again, the solution is to write things more reflective of his reality, and leave to each their own.

Me too! I find the trope sexy. It has nothing to do with what I think real life gay- or het relationships should be like. (I especially love it when the seme is possessive and dominating, ohoho.)

This. So much. Porn is not a realistic representation of relationships. It's an exaggeration to get people off.

Well, I think it helps that the various manga you've chosen for the background of your secret don't particularly fall into the worst of the seme/uke tropes that you see people complaining about. I mean, of the ones I recognise, they're not without their cliches. But they also have actual characterisation, beyond 'stoic seme' and 'I exist to have cock in my ass and also no means yes uke'. And while the ukes are still often drawn as physically smaller than the semes, it's not by some of the ridiculous proportions you sometimes see, where the uke is considered tall if he's at eye level with the seme's nipples. Also, the ukes are drawn as adult men, rather than little boys. If these are the examples you've found of the seme/uke dynamic, I'm not surprised you enjoy it.

There's a reason this stuff is made--it's popular. Plenty of people get off on this kink; it doesn't mean we have to think it shows healthy relationships, fercryinoutloud.

Hell, +50,000.

it doesn't mean we have to think it shows healthy relationships, fercryinoutloud.

Had to quote this. I think I want it embroidered on something. I don't understand why people think that anyone who has this kink has to assume everyone does. I'm kinky; I've known all my life most people aren't like me and don't get off on what I do. Why on earth would I assume that something I, the kinky weird one, get off on represents most people?!?!

So do I. I just prefer to have the roles reverse from the norm (taller on bottom, really emotional one on top, those sorts of things.) It's really difficult to find.

/your life is so hard, anon

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, middle of second row -- what IS that from? Because GUH.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hate to disappoint but they're just two side characters from a discontinued manga that wasn't all that great (Yuigonjou Yori Ai Wo Komete). I just wanted to sexy it up a little and immediately thought of them.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
OP, if you can provide a list of titles used in this secret, I will forever be in your debt. Because, seriously, the only one I recognize is Wild Rock, and I want them. Please? Anyone?

Here you go: http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/813509.html?thread=511850181#t511850181

Granted, not all of these are one I'd totally recommend or anything, I picked a bunch of my favourites but after that went with themes for a few of the others (like ones with particularly effeminate-looking ukes or older men).

[identity profile] teira-chan.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Same here OP ;A;

I know it's unrealistic, but it can be really cute sometimes. And, y'know, hot. ./////.

Whoever said porn had to be realistic and accurate in the first place? :T

won't work for everyone, but it's def not just you

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's okay as long as you know that's not how homosexual relationships work in real life - and I guess you do.

I mean... heterosexual porn is also an over-the-top portrayal of a relationship and often very sexist, right?

And in the end... it's just a kink. As long as you don't ask a gay couple "who the uke is", you know.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I see absolutely nothing wrong with liking seme/uke dynamics. Each to their own, etc.

However, I have been known to rant about it, for the simple reason that seme/uke dynamics often seem to sneak into fanfic about non - yaoi/BL anime/manga (which then sometimes spark epic 'topping' debates). Nothing wrong with liking seme and uke manga where the characters are written as such, but I'm really not happy about the shoehorning of characters in non-yaoi anime into these emotional stereotypes. For an easy example, during my time in the Death Note fandom, I really rolled my eyes at seme/uke stuff cropping up everywhere in the characterization of L and Light in Light/L (or the reverse) relationships in fanfiction. Neither of them is even remotely like an uke. I understand it's a kink and all that, but in so many cases, it's just flat-out OOC, and I hate OOC. :/
