I like her more when she's paired with Ivy instead of Joker.

Same here, I get knee jerk reactions when it comes to abusive relationships like Harley and Joker's (or pretty much any abusive relationship, period). I could never, ever love/accept them or Harley as a result, not matter how "awesome" the comics/cartoons/etc try to make her be. I will always shake my head at her for staying with an abusive asshole who's only using her and sees her as a toy.

I gave her a chance a long time ago but she's not all that, IMO. She'll always crawl back to Joker. Always. Even though that's exactly her thing and what defines her, it's impossible for me to enjoy her as a character because she's abused so often (she doesn't fight back, not really, or else Joker would stop permanently). "But she fights back sometimes!" die-hard fangirls like to say, but it's just an excuse to me. It has no real effect on the Joker. How could it?

Same anon: I should also point out, Ivy is also manipulative and can be abusive but Harley has a bigger chance at standing up to her than to Joker. Ivy's like the "lesser evil", so to speak, though by no means the great friend Harley truly deserves.

wait, I like Harley as a character but why does she "deserve" a great friend? She is a villain who has done some pretty terrible shit to other people. Her freudian excuse can only excuse her so far.

I can see what you mean but I think Harley's been shown as a sympathetic villain so often, it's hard to say she's on the same level as Joker when it comes to redeemable qualities. Why wouldn't she deserve a better friend? One could could even say everyone deserves a great friend, period. Even villains. Even Harley's who's done terrible things but has also tried to be good, actually tried and was upset when it didn't work out for whatever reason.

Joker and Ivy are a bad influence on her and always have been. She'll never be able to go back to a life of normalcy and be a decent person if they stay around her, influencing and manipulating her. That's the tragedy of her character. She's a follower, not a leader, but she did pretty well on her own as Harleen.

She could go back if she had someone on her side who actually cared about her and not just their own ass and what they can get out of the relationship. I see her as someone who needs someone so badly (her jealousy streak is pretty telling, she loses it when Ivy or Joker show more attention to anyone else besides her). Why can't that someone be a good person for a change? Why should Ivy be the best possible friend there is for her? Anything can happen in comics, so anything can still happen to Harley. The character constantly walking in circles and never changing becomes stale after a while, IMO. I know there's a lot of readers, particularly (mostly?) female, who WANT Harley to stay by Joker's side at all times because they "belong together". Which brings me back to my extreme dislike of their abusive relationship, so...
