You're not a bad feminist for liking a fictional character. No exceptions.

[identity profile] skeffles.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
There is one exception you know, liking whashername from Twilight. Then you are not just a bad feminist, but a bad person overall.

I don't know, I always thought Harley was relatively feminist-friendly because okay, she's obsessed with a murderous patient, but she can still hold her own, her relationship with Ivy is one of the most fantastic things in recent comics, and is a really fun character overall. Besides, that original costume is great! It's functional while still being cute, iconic, AND pretty fun, which speaks to her personality. It's only recently that I've seen her turned into some sexpot piece of eye candy (Arkham Asylum/City, New 52, etc.) and an overall much less ladyreader-friendly character. If that makes any sense.

teal deer- I think Harley's a fantastic lady in comics but her most recent incarnations have been embodiments of obviously male-oriented hypersexual fantasies.

Ivy and Harley have always had a relationship...

She does come round to the 'this is abusive, I can leave and work on my own' thing a few times - also the sexism of her character's situation often depends on the writer. She's meant to be a very insightful, cunning psychiatrist but some writers have her as a former intern without any intelligence whatsoever (i) 'Mad Love' and ii) LOOKIN' AT YOU, ARKHAM GODDAMN CITY).

Her miniseries is excellent!

I don't think liking her makes you a bad feminist.

She's a character with an addiction, it's just that her addiction is another human being, and that human being happens to be a man. In her case, her relationship is 100% unhealthy, but overall I'm not keen on this trend of people thinking any female character who aspires to be in a romantic relationship with a man is anti-feminist.

Yes, some women will literally latch on to any man who will marry them, regardless of attraction, shared interests and ideals or anything to build a fundamental relationship on, and these women will act as if they've accomplished the ultimate goal and that they've 'beaten' or 'won' against their unmarried friends. Depressingly, I've known several women who think like this and are now, several years later, suffering because they wanted a wedding but not a marriage. It's crushing to see people I care about rushing to achieve their dream, only to realise that they've put all their eggs in the wrong basket, just for the sake of saying they have a basket (okay, stretching this metaphor thin here, sorry) and that applies whether their goal is marriage or a certain career or anything else.

But these women are the exception, and it doesn't mean every woman who wants to fall in love is somehow a bad feminist. At the end of the day, it's about making choices, and even the women who marry to get the ring on their finger rather than because they feel they've found the man they want to spend the rest of their lives with are making a choice. If a woman wants to get married, that's her choice, and doing so doesn't make her anti-women or anti-feminist.

The only issue where I can see people equating you liking Harley with being a bad feminist is if you don't see that her relationship with the Joker is unhealthy. If you romanticise it or aspire to it, I mean. The Joker abuses Harley physically and emotionally, uses her whenever it's convenient, has completely destroyed her life, and has literally tried to kill her on more than one occasion. If you romanticise that kind of relationship then, yes, you're promoting some very anti-feminist ideals and also probably suffering from a lot of other issues.

But if you enjoy Harley as a character, enjoy her story and her personality for what it is, then doesn't instantly make you a bad feminist at all.

This secret. Is an amazing example of why I hate what the feminist movement is becoming.

Harley's got MAJOR issues. But she's an amazing character. And even if some of her traits (aka: obsession and worship of her Mister J) are problematic, she's got some amazing qualities, too. And for a COMPLETE LOONY, she's a pretty strong character!

Liking a character doesn't make you a bad feminist. Liking certain traits of any given character could be indicative of a gray area.

OP, enjoy your crazed unstable harlequin. Rock on.

What? Are you insulting my queen? She's fierce.

I will ignore all logic.

...

Meh, I don't think it makes you anti-feminist or anything. If you idolize her and believe she does no wrong, maybe you should be worried. Otherwise, you're safe.

...But she's not THAT bad...is she?

Nah, you're fine. I don't expect my male characters to be perfect, so neither should I expect my female characters to be perfect. The problem is that there are so few female characters that it's easy to expect everything from each and every one of them. If we had a million fascinating characters around, then it'd be easier to let it go when one of them makes bad decisions or longs for babies or is in an abusive relationship or is entirely too cold for her own good, etc. They're so scarce right now that each and every one of them feels like they're supposed to be a representative of all females and all things feminine: that is ridiculous and unfair. It's hard to move your mind to this point of view, but I find it's easier to enjoy media. Enjoy each and every female character for her innate qualities, but recognize the underlying issues and why the female characters are depicted in that way. Note the sexism in the creators, but don't blame the characters.

It's okay to like a character who doesn't have the same values you do, or even directly contradicts them. I like characters that I'd want dead in real life after all the shit they've done.

Eh, they don't portray her obsession/relationship with the Joker as a good thing. It's written as a character flaw for once. She's not someone to aspire to be, she is a villain. So, I don't see a big problem with the way she was written (of course I'm not an expert on her). And she definitely has a lot of quirky traits, talent and attitude to like.

Not seeing the argument for it making you a bad feminist. Of course, I don't think liking any female character is really going to make you bad feminist, I usually only take issue with bad writing behind a character or situation.

Here's an article on her (http://journal.transformativeworks.org/index.php/twc/article/view/259/235) that might help—it's about seeing Harley as a woman fully aware of her submissive nature. Personally, I love her to pieces, and the fact that she fully acknowledges the Joker is awful for her and that she's, personally, a terrible person. For her, it's that love without abandon that's perfect. It's very easy to screw that up, of course, and the new DCU has, uh… uh… been the new DCU.

(Nicki Minaj is my Harley now, Suicide Squad.)

Really? I feel pretty good about it, myself. She's pretty much the only woman in the series who's allowed to be a total goofball and isn't constantly in femme fatale mode.

I've never really understood this "I feel like a bad feminist for liking this anti-feminist character" thing. You don't have to look up to or admire or agree with or want to emulate a character in order to like them.

[identity profile] rebelwithaclock.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't exactly keep up with Feminist movements too often, so I might be wrong, but I'd think a well-written, fleshed out, interesting female character with strengths and weaknesses would be pretty feminist even if her weakness is that she's in love with a whackjob, right?
