But that's because I always thought most US cartoons sucked anyway, and my reference is anime from the 80es and the cartoons that were co-produced between Japan and Europe (Cities of Gold, for example).
As of nowadays cartoons, I can't get over how ugly the art looks, for most of those I know... (I didn't see MLP, but that's not my cup of tea anyway).

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)Except I actually watched cartoons of my age. But I remember having to stop my Saturday morning cartoons because the writing went downhill and my god, the art SUCKED.
I mean, compare Recess and Doug (charming stories of growing up and friendship with vaguely whimsical but solid animation) with Phineas and Ferb. I can't talk about the plot of that, but I can just not watch the art. Shouldn't animation have improved in the last ten years?
I remember buying X-Men evolution on a whim for 1.99 someplace and watching it made me nostalgic for the relatively softer lines. It seems everything is sharp and angled now, to the point where the characters barely look human.
...*sigh* I sound like a old person waxing about 'the good old days', don't I?
