If I want a hamster called Dumbledore, that's what he's being called. He doesn't understand. Hell, he doesn't even know it's his name.
I agree with the people who say that it's better than doing it to kids. You need to like the name on its own, and it probably shouldn't be anything too unique. IE: If you wanted to name your son "Harry" after Harry Potter, that's fine because it's a common enough name that no one will connect the two (unless your surname is Potter, I suppose) but if you name him "Albus" for instance, people are probably going to make the connection.
This can also happen with names that aren't weird as such, but are fairly uncommon until a bit of media makes them popular. "Edward" isn't that uncommon a name, but if you had a son between about 2007 and probably 2013, say, it's a safe bet that a lot of other people will assume that you named him after Edward Cullen, even if you didn't. This is why I really wish Bella had been called "Sarah" or something"; Isabella is a lovely name, but I can't bloody use it now without thinking of Bella Swan. I'm just hoping that by the time I have a daughter (if I have a daughter) Twilight will have left the public consciousness enough that the connection won't automatically be made.
And I am really rambling on today. I am desperately trying to stave off sleep, is my problem.
Also, AWWW, THAT KITTEN!!
