This may sound naive because I've never really interacted with Disney fandom, but, um, what?

There are actually people who ship Belle with Gaston?

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here. And that just sounds weird, considering how much she couldn't stand him and how much he was just trying to get into her pants because she was hot. Frankly, I'm surprised (as is everyone, I think) that he didn't just bang the triplets and be done with it; they're far more cnventionally attractive, I think. Honestly, if she'd fallen all over him too he probably would have completely ignored her.

But... I can't see B/B as being abusive. As said above, yeah, he starts out as a jerk, but he comes to care about her, and he makes a real effort to change his ways, even when it's completely against his normal behaviours. I mean, okay, he basically kidnapped her and locked her in a dungeon, but he didn't keep her there, and he gave her her freedom when she asked for it. How is that abusive?

I dunno. I just don't get the whole thing, probably because I have nothing to do with the Disney fandom and it has honestly never occurred to me to ship B/G or that anyone wouldn't ship B/B. O_o

...Uh, I don't care about Beauty and the Beast, so I don't have a dog in this fight. I just saw your comment and had to respond.

Anyway, sorry to rain on your parade, just let me repeat your words back to you.

"He basically kidnapped her and locked her in a dungeon."

"How is that abusive?"

"HE BASICALLY KIDNAPPED HER AND LOCKED HER IN A DUNGEON."

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! True. But he wasn't dating her then. XD

Oh, okay, I know that's all kids of wrong to begin with and if it wasn't fictional I doubt I'd be okay with it, but it probably doesn't help that I'm coming at it from the perspective of a "Phantom of the Opera" fan (book-based, for extra kidnapping trauma lol), so from that perspective, him agreeing to allow her to take her father's place as his prisoner, BUT THEN giving her the run of the place, trying to be as kind to her (for the most part, once he'd started trying to not be such an asshole) as possible, and then giving her her freedom when she asked for it, sorta makes it not particularly abusive? So far as these things go?

I know, I know. XD But still. XD

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
*kinds, sheesh.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
da

...just because your captor is nice to you doesn't make it okay that he's your captor. and she shouldn't have had to ask for her freedom in the first place. and I say this as someone who doesn't even deride their relationship as abusive

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, thinking about it logically I totally agree. I guess it's probably because it came out when I was in my late teens and deeply hung up on "romance" (and also a really big fan of the old TV series by the same name). Looking at it objectively I can see that yeah, it is abusive.

I still do think, though, that by the end of the movie the Beast is a good match for her (certainly far better than Gaston would likely ever be).

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that is pretty much abusive.

I love Belle/Beast, and I don't claim that their early relationship didn't have effed up elements to it. I do think that after he released her though the relationship changed and it no longer had abuse in it, but to say the early relationship wasn't bad is... well, wrong.

Although I do like to point out to people who are excessively ragging on everything and how bad a person Beast is for kidnapping her that they are using a lot of real world logic in that situation. I mean, in the real world people don't typically get curses on themselves that turn them into horrible monsters until true love breaks the spell. Really, I imagine as far as excuses that semi-justify kidnapping someone, the chance to break a horrific curse on you and all your servants is a good one (and one that isn't present in the real world).

I always kind of assumed that Gaston actually was sleeping the triplets and that was part of the reason why they were so hung up over him.

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me!!

I guess I always assumed that he wasn't and that's why they were always all over him, haha, but I had a less filthy mind back when I first saw it, ha ha.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
In my view, people who say Beast is abusive are just nitpicky.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
IA. It's a Disney movie. It has dancing lamps and clocks. You can't watch it like it occurs in a realistic world.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of people ship two characters because they're interested in the messed up dynamic, not necessarily because they think that dynamic is healthy or romantic. That's what foe-yay is all about.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I guess the secret just made it sound like a bunch of people prefer them as a romantic "love" pairing. I get the foe-yay kink, though in this case I can't see it being anything but noncon, because I've never had the impression Belle was even the slightest bit attracted to him.
