I've never seen the non-photoshopped version of that screencap before. it just looks wrong to me now.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I just have a tiny OT question... Photoshopped version? The one with their faces switched, or is there another one that I'm missing? O_o

People actually ship Belle/Gaston?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I like Belle/Gaston. I like Gaston and the thought of somebody taming him. The thought of him finding real love.

[identity profile] errantnarwhal.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I do, but I like it because it's messed up. I don't think it's "better" than Belle/Beast or anything

[identity profile] errantnarwhal.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've never ever met anyone who thought that a Belle/Gaston relationship could be perfectly healthy while also believing a Belle/Beast relationship to be inherently abusive. Where are these people?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
This. I've seen people ship Belle/Gaston, who totally acknowledge that's a fucked-up hate ship. I've seen people claim that Beast/Belle is abusive. But I've never seen a person who falls into both camps.

And, honestly, most of the people I've seen claiming Beast/Belle is abusive aren't active in the Beauty & The Beast fandom. They're either Disney fans who prefer a different princess and use the whole 'abusive relationship' thing to put down Belle (for some reason, certain Disney Princess fans can be hyper competitive and vicious about comparing princesses). Or they're people on general comms like this who swing by with their edgy opinions about, for instance, Ariel being a bad feminist, whose arguments always fall apart when held up against what actually happens in the movie, compared to what they vaguely remember happens in the movie.

This. The only Belle/Beast bashers I know are the same crowd of people who nitpick the shit out of all the Disney movies and think their relationship is Stockholm syndrome.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
wait, woah woah. People seriously ship Belle/Gaston?

I mean, as much as I love BatB, people definitely can criticize the film and the Belle/Beast relationship. But people criticize Belle/Beast and think that Belle/Gaston is any better?

...damn.

I know from the brief time when I traversed the fanfiction.net corner of BatB fandom there's a pair of highly regarded BatB fics about a functional Belle/Gaston relationship. Very not my thing, so I didn't read them, but presumably those fics spawned some weirdos.

Either that, or OP was just thrown off by some anti-Disney trolls.

I didn't know people ship Bell/Gaston and say Bell/Beast is abusive. Lol, people are weird. Just ignore them. Don't let it bother you. They may be emotionally stunted. Or along those lines.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
The abusive thing actually *can* make sense if you apply real life terms to it - he did, basically, kidnap her and blackmail her into staying - and honestly he wasn't the nicest of guys when they met. So I can see where they're coming from, even though I don't view it that way. /shrugs

I never knew people shipper Belle/Gaston tbh. I always preferred Gaston/Me. Or Gaston/Vanessa as the next best thing.

*shipped, obv

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Just wondering, do you have any Gaston fic recs? I read a fic with him that was pretty entertaining and made me interested in reading more about him. No worries if not, I just thought I'd check. ^_^

This may sound naive because I've never really interacted with Disney fandom, but, um, what?

There are actually people who ship Belle with Gaston?

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here. And that just sounds weird, considering how much she couldn't stand him and how much he was just trying to get into her pants because she was hot. Frankly, I'm surprised (as is everyone, I think) that he didn't just bang the triplets and be done with it; they're far more cnventionally attractive, I think. Honestly, if she'd fallen all over him too he probably would have completely ignored her.

But... I can't see B/B as being abusive. As said above, yeah, he starts out as a jerk, but he comes to care about her, and he makes a real effort to change his ways, even when it's completely against his normal behaviours. I mean, okay, he basically kidnapped her and locked her in a dungeon, but he didn't keep her there, and he gave her her freedom when she asked for it. How is that abusive?

I dunno. I just don't get the whole thing, probably because I have nothing to do with the Disney fandom and it has honestly never occurred to me to ship B/G or that anyone wouldn't ship B/B. O_o

Lots of people ship two characters because they're interested in the messed up dynamic, not necessarily because they think that dynamic is healthy or romantic. That's what foe-yay is all about.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I side-eye anyone who says Gaston 'wasn't so bad'. I've seen people defend his plan of putting Belle's father in an asylum just to get her to marry him.

There are people who actually ship Belle/Gaston?! THE HELL? I get a major date-rape vibe from him.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
...there are people that think hes better than the Beast?

...really?

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched Beauty and the Beast for what I think was the first time a few months ago, and I put my thoughts up on my journal (http://pendingprogress.livejournal.com/46474.html). Conclusion was I probably wouldn't have seen so many faults had I seen it when I came out (i.e. when I was a kid).
